In these blizzard conditions today will the Arlington National "Tomb of the Unknown" Honor Guard be required to march and stand out in formation? I would think there are exceptions.

Now the answer I was looking for is they usually march for 1 hour in winter months, but with these blizzard conditions will cut back to every 20 minutes or so. I answered the question for the rest here and you dick breath.

I was in the Old Guard from 1995-99. Yes 24-7. When the cemetery is closed there is a guard shack next to the tomb. The soldiers can go in there. Also, after hours, uniform is BDU's. Dress uniform 1 hour prior to opening and 1 hour after closing. Most after hours is dedicated to practicing the routine.

Thank you. With this weather I wouldn't think the guards could stand out there the full 1 hour designated for winter time. What about there safety?

There is a small barracks under the amphitheater. it has bunks, dayroom kitchen, lockers, press machines, etc. They'll be fine.

So, just to be clear (because I've lived here forever, but always wondered):

#1 Guards are dressed in blues one hour before opening and one hour after closing, and in BDUs after-hours.
#2 There is a guard shack that Guards can duck into, if need be, during after-hours, but is manned 24/7 so a sentry will always on post at the Tomb (?)
#3 The "steps and turn" routine is done only during hours the cemetery is open, while the routine is practiced after-hours (?)

And will the ANC be open on Sunday?

I am reverent and respectful and silent.. A couple years back the guard ducked into the little shelter on the left as you face the Tomb and picked up the phone.. An Obama Voter in the crowd piped up.. "Hello Dominos Pizza" We all gave the ass the evil eye. What a jerk.

Not a place to disrespect those who served. And that's the point of the Tomb. By the Grace of God it could be anyone who serves in the uniform of the Armed Forces. I worked with a guy who was in the Old Guard. And basically what he told me is what others have stated above. The nights and off hours are training, but there are there 24/7 and when their ready, then they go before the public. The Tomb Badge they wear is a honor that is highly respected and must be earned after several months of duty.

OP here: Finally some credible answers from honorable citizens and hopefully the other rift-raft here can respect some valid answers. These are the responses I was looking for. Thank You.

The post will be manned, but I doubt there'll be much marching going on this weekend at the Tomb.

I'd have to imagine that any funeral taking place tomorrow or Sunday would be a quite memorable scene for all those involved.

Of course they are out there. As you can see from this thread, the government and most of this country care more about the dead than they do the living.

I don't think it will be open Sunday. Depends on what the Federal Government does. ANC's schedule follows any federal property's schedule for emergencies, etc. There are civilian grounds keepers doing snow removal at the tomb so the guards can work.

To answer your other three question, that about sums it up. When I was assigned there, there were 3 shifts or "reliefs". First, Second, and Third. 8 hours on, 8 hours off and 8(ish) hours training. I was third relief. Basically night shift. No crowds, all practice. I never made past that. I didn't move up to the higher reliefs, and didn't earn the Tomb badge.

They were a dedicated group of men. I couldn't hang, basically. It consumes your life. I didn't have the constant dedication that was required. Very difficult when you're early 20's and have a young family at home.

So I went back to a regular line company. The 3rd US INF,(the Old Guard) was my third duty station. I'd been in field units for 5 years prior. I wasn't used to the ceremonial aspect of a soldier.


Anyway, enough reminiscing, lol. I hoped I answered some of your questions.

Soldiers stood guard over cemeteries on foreign soil to prevent grave robbers.
Unless US military cemeteries have the same problem then why do they still continue this ceremony? The dead ain't going nowhere anytime soon.

AAAAND . . . the question everyone wants to know - does the Guard actually walk during horribly bad weather conditions? Well, yes and no. First, during the recent snow, they likely were trading shifts every 30 or so minutes. Also, if bad weather is present, Guard will be offered the choice of seeking shelter. Would he/she? I don't know that one ever has. It's not viewed as "I'm a badass and can handle this", but more of a "I will not leave this tomb because the fallen deserve it and that's the least I can do." However, I am aware that there have been VERY rare cases in which a Guard was ORDERED to take shelter. (Tornado very close, hurricane, etc.)

These soldiers are provided with the training and "gear" to physically and mentally be prepared to survive deplorable conditions. They honor their brothers and sisters well, and take it very seriously, as they should.

Men who are called on to be willing to die for one another (which is who they are really willing to die for: their brothers in their unit) form a very tight connection. The traditions of honoring the dead are really for the living. It shows a soldier that if he fell, he will be remembered, his death will matter, and that he matters. It helps build that connection and motivates them to give their all in combat.

Guarding the Tomb of the Unknowns is our ultimate symbol that the sacrifice is appreciated. And it is a symbol; we don't do it for every unknown. But by guarding those three men who fell, we symbolize that we honor all of them.

No, the dead do not care that their sacrifice is appreciated, but it reminds the living to appreciate those who do serve, and to encourage those who serve that we honor them and will remember them if they do fall.
