No more country of Origin on meat- no information from Giant Butchers

Giant butchers won't be able to tell you what country your steak comes from because there are no more butchers at Giant. All meat comes from outside vendors. The meat is coming in gas and vacuumed packed weeks and months before sent to the stores.

You could ... you know ... ask where it came from.
You could buy from meat purveyors who mark the origin of their meat.
Why are you crying about what some douche in a suit put on a piece of paper? Why do you need him to force Giant to tell you where your meat originated? Fix your own problems and pay your own way.

I could, you know... only if Giant Food... you know, knows where it comes from. Since the meat used is from outside vendors...you know, they obtain their meats fro the cheapest of sources. Personally, I'm not concerned. I don't buy my steaks from Giant. i use Safeway, since they still use certified sources and paperwork...you know.

Obama's a Republican? You do know he has to sign it for it to become law, right?

Same w trader joes - mystery meat. Used to tell you USA or Australia now is just meat from somewhere. This bill is some of the only legislation the Republicans could pass. Better funding for vets? Nope. Hiding the origin of the meat we eat from us - yes.

Canada and Mexico were suing the US for 3 Billion because knowing where our meat was coming from was 'unfair' to them. US meat producers didnt want the country of origin labeling either. Many Democrats joined in opposing COOL. American consumers dont get to know where the animals they eat come from, period. Its not fair to Mexico or our own meat industry somehow. Eat meat sparingly and when you do buy it from a local source (MD, VA, PA etc) - you will have to go with expensive grass fed/organic with is better for you anyway. Fuck Feed Lots and Factory Farming

"OCTOBER 21, 2014
The World Trade Organization (WTO) has ruled in favor of Canada and Mexico in an ongoing dispute with the United States over country-of-origin labeling (COOL) on meat.

The latest U.S. labeling rules, put into effect in 2013, require meat sold in grocery stores to indicate the country, or countries, where the animal was born, raised and slaughtered.

According to a WTO report released on Monday, the labeling rules unfairly discriminate against meat imports and give the advantage to domestic meat products. But the WTO compliance panel also found that the labels do provide U.S. consumers with information on the origin of their food, countering Canada and Mexico’s assertion that the labels do not serve their intended purpose.Back in November 2013, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said that the WTO should have the final say on COOL, suggesting that the U.S. might give in to whatever the WTO compliance panel determined.

This is the second time the WTO has ruled against the U.S. in this dispute. After passing mandatory COOL rules in 2008, the U.S. amended COOL in 2012 following an earlier WTO ruling against them. The Canadian cattle and hog industries say that COOL has cost them combined losses of more than $900 million USD. If the COOL rules persist, the Canadian government has threatened to place tariffs on U.S. meat imports, along with products such as wine, potatoes and orange juice.

The U.S. beef industry has strongly opposed COOL, while organizations representing consumers say that grocery shoppers deserve to know where their meat originates. “COOL is a failed program that will soon cost not only the beef industry, but the entire U.S. economy, with no corresponding benefit to consumers or producers,” said Bob McCan, president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, in a statement. “… We look forward to working with Congress to find a permanent solution to this issue, avoiding retaliation against not only beef, but a host of U.S. products.”

In a joint statement, the North American Meat Association and the American Meat Institute also lauded the WTO’s decision.

“USDA’s mandatory COOL rule is not only onerous and burdensome on livestock producers and meat packers and processors, it does not bring the U.S. into compliance with its WTO obligations,” the joint statement read. “By being out of compliance, the U.S. is subject to retaliation from Canada and Mexico that could cost the U.S. economy billions of dollars.”The consumer group Food & Water Watch called the ruling a threat to consumers’ right to know.

“The WTO’s continued assault against commonsense food labels is just another example of how corporate-controlled trade policy undermines the basic protections that U.S. consumers deserve,” said Food & Water Watch Executive Director Wenonah Hauter in a statement. “The United States should appeal the ruling and continue to fight for sensible consumer safeguards at the supermarket.”Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) also spoke out against the ruling and urged the Office of the U.S. Trade Representatives to appeal the ruling.

“Accurate information is essential in a competitive, free market and COOL provides consumers with essential information about the origin of their food,” DeLauro said in a statement. “If this ruling stands, U.S. ranchers will not be able to differentiate their products with a U.S. label and consumers will not have the information they need at the point of purchase.”

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representatives said that all options were being considered, including the possibility of appealing the ruling.

“A negotiated solution, not further litigation at the WTO, is the most realistic path to getting this issue resolved in the near term,” said a spokesperson for the office. “Allowing this case to wait for resolution in Geneva will only prolong the market uncertainty we’ve seen on all sides of this issue.”

This is just the beginning. Hear of the TPP? Obama fast-tracked it. Its a trade treaty that gives corporations absolute power. They will be suing governments constantly for interfering with their profits. In their own world courts. Also, a countries laws cannot interfere with business. Such as an oil spill. Your countries law against oil spills are your countries problem. You pay to clean it up.

You could always find a store that will tell you where their meat came from. That's what the lovely and talented "was a Butcher" did and look how it worked for him!

Dont listen to sleazy useful idiots that dont take responsibility for their consistent crimes against the people. Republicans sponsor, bring up and pass these bills primarily with their votes and power. They also put them on the budget as riders and hold the entire country hostage to fucking the people over by taking away their rights to know about their food. Republicans are authoritarian rat bastards.

"The reality is, biotechnology has time and time again proved safe,” the bill’s sponsor, Kansas Republican Rep. Mike Pompeo, said on the House floor. “We should not raise prices on consumers based on the wishes of a handful of activists."

Bottom Line. If consumers wanted their meat marked with country of origin (COO), they would pay more for that labeling and buy from stores who label COO.
They Don't.
People are buying meat without a care as to where it comes from. The consumer believes in the quality and safety of foreign meat. Get over it.

While true, it is incumbent upon those blessed with more intelligence to help the feeble minded masses. Im serious here. Cheap meat from factory farms tastes a lot similar to locally sourced meats ethically raised. The former is entirely unsustainable. Livestock living knee deep in their own ecoli laden feces (from being fed govt. subsidized corn instead of grass) is cheap short term but the effects on the health of consumers and the environment cannot be sustained. More people will get sick and eventually the stupidest of meat eaters will realize that shit is poison.

This is great news! Less regulation is always better. Too many god damn rules, glad they got rid of that.

Lots of people in amazing shape eat corn-fed meat. Here's a thought, just don't eat so much of it! Another thought, instead of wasting time recruiting our benevolent to force other people to "fix" your problems, get off your ass and work out.
