New Italian place headed for Mosaic District
Posted by: Biz Journal ()

Boston chef Michael Schlow — who has already made his mark in Greater Washington with D.C. restaurants Tico and The Riggsby — is heading to Northern Virginia with an Italian restaurant in the Mosaic District.

A restaurant named Alta Strada — of which Schlow owns two in New England — has filed for an alcoholic beverage license for a restaurant seating 101-150 people at 2911 District Ave. in Merrifield’s Mosaic District.

Schlow’s isn’t the only new restaurant heading to Mosaic: Jinya Ramen, part of a California-based chain that just announced its first D.C.-area location last month, also filed for an ABC license recently for 2911 District Ave., Suite 140.

Interesting developments! As good as we already have things out here in terms of dining out, more great options can never hurt! But I wonder why all these upscale establishments keep opening in Vienna and Merrifield instead of places like Falls Church City? That place seems to have just fallen off the map! I know we rarely go there for anything, but is that the general situation as well?

Isn't Mosaic closer to Falls Church than Vienna?

Of course you didn't. You have no class or taste whatsoever.

A sushi place? I would be more excited about a new Tippy's Tacos. It's a long ride out to Merrifield.

Wrong. Mosaic has some wonderful units with views of a communications tower and/or a US Postal sorting facility.

LOL! Good call.

The only difference is South Park was predominantly going after the gentrification aspect of it. "Views of historic Kenny's House" Making it easier to skewer. Mosaic was just a shitty old Multiplex and mattress stores.

Shit, I'd live in a Mosaic/SodoSopa if I was older with the kids gone.
Tasty food and good theater within walking distance of home. I could get a few more drinks without driving.

Instead of Kennys House, you can look at Great Wall, Hmart and Unique from the luxurious Lofts at Mosaic.

Sure, you could ...
Or you could buy/rent one of the majority residences that doesn't have that view. Many people that live in a dense urban area aren't in it for the views. The ability to walk to food/shopping/entertainment makes up for it.

Plus, someone with a half a brain would research the surroundings. Edens owns both the Mosaic property and the Fairfax Plaza with Golds Gym and Great Wall.
They are just negotiating/waiting-for-closing with the two pieces they don't own Unique and the storage place. Then it's another additional section of Mosaic.

The construction of livable space in the current Mosaic is just wrapping up, so they have some time before full occupancy. Once it's full, on to the next phase.

Yes, there's still much in the Mosaic District pipeline, but to date it's been a big success. People have come, businesses have come, food has come. Meanwhile, work at Mill Creek and Halstead Square has come along nicely as well. The whole area seems to be headed toward Hitsville.

What's going on with the Harris Teeter that's supposed to be at Mill Creek? Is that still happening?

Mosaic District...Mosaic District...this is EXACTLY what is wrong with Northern Virginia. We have no heritage, we have no soul. And the reason we have no heritage or soul is because we let developers from out of the area come in here and gentrify our hometown which they think gives them the right to change the name of things like they are fucking Pol Pot in Cambodia in '72 and they are executing some kinda' Year One political policy! I mean...what the fuck, man?

I have no problem with people taking their own money and putting that into improving something for the greater good. Would I rather have the Multiplex, the construction equipment rental yard, the gas station and the Taco Bell...or would I rather have what is there now? Well, I kinda' miss the drive-in that as there before the Multiplex and I kinda' miss the Taco Bell but, truth be told...it's better now, no question. More people, spending money and tax revenue being generated.

They didn't need to change the name. It's still Merrifield. It will always be Merrifield. And no amount of marketing money, or big signs, or word of mouth is going to change that. Are you telling me, you could spend all that money renewing Merrifield and people wouldn't come if it was still called Merrifield? Horsefuckingbullcrap...that place is a God damn blast now, especially in the summer. There is so much sweet ass to hit around there it is officially the most target rich environment in NOVA.

So, when people say, "Meet me in Mosaic District!" be sure to tell them, "I don't know where that is but, I'll see you at Merrifield!"

Indeed, let's keep that 'heritage' of Multiplex and the gang violence in the giant parking lot.

Why stop at calling it Merrifield? Why not go back to 1860s when it was just a farm owned by Mary Glassell?

I don't know what all the fuss is about. The Mosaic District is a neighborhood in Merrifield. There are parts of Merrifield that are not in the Mosaic District. It's kind of like Adams-Morgan or DuPont Circle downtown.
