Trummer's on Main
Posted by: Foodie ()

Anyone been to Trummer's on Main lately? I have special dinner planned there with my (hopefully) soon to be fiancee and have read some mixed reviews online. Is the food really (and I mean 5* really) that good and worth the money or should a skip it and go to restaurant in DC? I plan on popping the question after a romantic dinner there and I don't want bad service or poor food at the restaurant to screw it up!

You might be referring to the Inn at Little Washington, but maybe not.

Agree w/Little Inn. They will make it extra special memory talk w/them when make reservation & they'll help you decide how to do. Like their menu better. Trummers has some 'unusual' things that don't interest me!

Trummers is very nice. Make sure to take a look at their wine cellar while you're there.

Going out to the Inn would be special, but not worth all that money. You could go away for a weekend for the same money. Trummers is nice enough, close, and a lot cheaper. Ciao in Centreville is great, but not the romantic atmosphere. You can always go to Little Washington for your 2nd marriage...

Trummers on Main is fantastic.
Chez Francois is also good. about double the price.
what are you looking to spend?

A special dinner at the Inn at Little Washington will set you back at least $1,000. It's an amazing special experience but costly. Trummers is a fine bet for a better price.

The ideal location would be the Inn at Little Washington. It's fantastic, but very, very expensive. If money is no object, you could also stay at the Inn overnight. L'Auberge Chez Francois was great when my husband proposed to me years ago, but I don't know that it's maintained the cachet it once had. Both are quite a drive. I haven't been to l'Hermitage. The menu doesn't appeal to me and reviews have been mixed, as you've found out.

Personally, I would look at reviews by Tom Sietsema (sp?) for the Washington Post. In addition, last I knew, the Washingtonian puts out an annual list of restaurants voted "most romantic", "best value", etc. by readers. I would do a little research for such an important occassion.

My wife and I had our 20th anniversary weekend at the Inn at Little Washington. The menu that night noted our anniversary and they designed it so we could use it as a keepsake. The dinner was outstanding, but cost about $1500. Counting our room that night (which was also outstanding), total cost for the weekend was about $2500.

We joke that going to The Inn at Little Washington is kind of like going on the Titanic; you're only going to take the trip once.

Trummers is nice place but nothing special, the service was mildly annoying....if this was not in the Town of Clifton, it would be just another independent restaurant with a Chef.

From your previous posts, it's clear that Checkers (with a swig of Ripple) is more your speed. Your wife is one lucky woman.

How's life in the trailer park? You really need to get out of Dale City more often.

I don't know how people are coming up with some of these numbers. I've dined at the Inn twice and stayed overnight once, and while expensive, it isn't $1500 for dinner unless you are going crazy on the wine. I believe the current price for the tasting menu is around $180, so dinner for two is $360 plus tax/tip. I guess if you spent $900 on wine you could get to $1500, but you should be able to do a lot better than that. Dinner with wine pairings is $280/person, or you could get something decent for between $100-$200/bottle. The time I stayed overnight our room was about $800. I think dinner and the room ran about $1500 total.

Trummer's will be a lot less expensive than that, of course. If you decide to dine there, call and tell them you are planning a special evening and ask for the private table in the Winter Garden. It is physically separated from the rest of the dining room, sits up a little higher, and has a view of the room. It's more romantic and makes you feel like you are getting special treatment.

You should certainly do fine at Trummer's. They do a very nice job. The Inn and Chez Francois are a long drive from Clifton, and while still awfully nice, neither one is at its peak. Rose's Luxury downtown would be the "buzz" place to go these days, but you do have to wait in line to get in. That's not a factor at Trummer's once you have your reservations.

I was told they have a new chef. I thought he was at the Inn before.

I had a girlfriend who was dying to try Little Washington. There is a waiting list ,so plan ahead. Anyway, this ex-girlfriend decided on the tasting menu which means it's for 2, so it's about $180 for each. I had no idea she would do this and I didn't feel comfortable bringing up the fact of who orders like this on someone else's dime).
It was nice if you like 3 people to bring each sampling (the appetizer was popcorn with a server grating truffles on it, a server holding the bowl and a server telling you what a great experience this is). Alcohol is paired with each sampling but I don't drink. The main things I remember is I didn't get any pussy that night and after I dropped off my ex, I got chilidog from 7-11 on the way home and that was the highlight of my night.
