The difference between a $2500 bike and a $6500 is mostly weight. A few pounds. You can usually get the same frame with different components for 000's less. If you ride 10,000 miles or more a year the better components may wear better and require less replacement. Even avid riders roll less than that.
I ride ~4,000 road and ~1000 miles Mt Bike a year. I buy quality bikes with mid level components and the bikes last at least 10 years of service. I repair the bikes myself (except headsets cause I dont have a press) because I cannot stand having my bike parked in a shop while they take forever to fix it (often poorly).
When I race I can always rent a trial bike but I dont bother because I am not going to beat the sponsored athletes anyway - a bike shaving 5% off my time wont make the difference. Expensive pro level bikes are a status symbol for 99.5% of the riders that buy them. Fresh Bikes exists for the posers. I have more respect for someone driving a Rolls than I do some fat idiot riding a $10,000 race bike and they dont even know how to fix a flat.
just saying
