Fresh Bikes - Trust Fund Babies Only?

Went into Fresh Bikes in Merrifield (Mosiac) yesterday. Any experiences with this shop? They have a rewards club for those that spend over $10,000 a year. My budget is less than half that for a bike. They didnt seem at all interested in my business. Weird.

If you're spending 5-figures on a racing bike or anything over $500, you should be able to fix your own flats. It's not as if they're guaranteed to occur within a mile of your home. Maybe they should have a President's Club for people who spend $25,000 in a calendar year and provide a sag wagon in the event you're too pooped to bike.

Agreed - seems absurd to offer flat repair to people spending 10k on a bike. The sag wagon would be a great idea but even that is only useful on really long rides or multiday. Its a stupid shop for dumb rich folk imho.

If I'm spending $10k a year on a bike without a motor and accessories I better be getting free blowjobs, beers and filet every time I'm in the area.

I spent $1800 on a bike. That in itself seemed ridiculous, but I did it.

Ten-thousand mother-fucking-dollars on bicycles? TEN THOUSAND?!?!?!

Why do motorist hate the cyclists so much?

Its because cycling reminds them of how fat and lazy they really are. Everytime they see a cyclist they think to themselves, "Dam, I'm fat and lazy. F them bicyclers!"

Fresh Bike = ripoff. Go there if you like crappy service/no service unless you become one of their 'elite' customers (suckers).

If you want a high end road bike go to

Bonzai Sports at Falls Church
2822 Fallfax Drive
Falls Church, VA 22042
Get Directions
(703) 280-2248http://tribonzai.com/

They are very very friendly and understand the sacrifice it takes for most people to but a bike for thousands. Again nice people that wont look down on anyone especially those normal people getting entry level race bikes.

High end Mt. Bikers order online or hit ups Haymarket Bicycles http://www.yelp.com/biz/haymarket-bicycles-haymarket

If you are spending 000's on a bike you certainly do not deserve to be ignored or worse insulted as 'poor' just because you are not spending $10,000+

There are some stupid people that make the most look bad.

I saw the Reston Bike Club tonight. The front 6 or 7 guys out of the whole group of roughly 30 bikers try to outrace the late rush hour traffic up Wihele Avenue as it winds south towards the Metro station. They were really pissing off the drivers as there's no shoulder on that road. 40mph traffic was trying to converge from 2 lanes to 1 as they passed the lead riders. As I got to the Tall Oaks intersection of Wiehle, I was surprised to see a large group of about 25 cyclists were just sitting and waiting for the light to turn green.

Obviously fresh bikes are fresh, not frozen, stale, moldy or rotten like the bikes at some of those OTHER bike stores. If you like your bikes fresh and never frozen its going to cost more. Fresh bikes!

Wheel sets and drivetrains for those things can run in the thousands. I'ts an expensive hobby if you want it to be, just like anything else. To answer your question, yes it's for filthy rich people. We're in the DC area, I'm sure they do plenty of business.

So many bicycle experts here. Surprised.

So what's a good bike for someone who has not had one since college and is now 30 years older, 50 pounds heavier, and the knees don't work like they used to, in fact are generally painful?

Any bike really. You need to ease back into a program. If you know zero about bike repair go buy a new bike for $500 from performance. Ask them to show you what you need (breakdown kit, pump, water bottle, helmet, pants, lock, chain lube, sunglasses). Ask them to show you how to fix a flat.

Go ride 4 times a week. dont worry about distance or speed for the first 30-60 days just ride. Stay away from major streets if at all possible. Paths, side streets are great. Never know you might love it.

+1 for Bonzai. I have not bought a bike from there but, that's my go-to for service. They are not the cheapest...just the best.

This is Northern Virginia. People who live here enjoy nice things. It doesn't matter that I'm never going to compete in the Tour de France. What matters is, when I take my weekly casual ride or monthly century...I am much more comfortable on my $6,300 Litespeed than I am on a $200 Huffy and I can afford the best. Bikes are no different than any other goods. For the most part you get what you pay for. Price not being an object, the $6,300 product is going to give you infinitely better overall enjoyment than a $200 alternative.

The difference between a $2500 bike and a $6500 is mostly weight. A few pounds. You can usually get the same frame with different components for 000's less. If you ride 10,000 miles or more a year the better components may wear better and require less replacement. Even avid riders roll less than that.

I ride ~4,000 road and ~1000 miles Mt Bike a year. I buy quality bikes with mid level components and the bikes last at least 10 years of service. I repair the bikes myself (except headsets cause I dont have a press) because I cannot stand having my bike parked in a shop while they take forever to fix it (often poorly).

When I race I can always rent a trial bike but I dont bother because I am not going to beat the sponsored athletes anyway - a bike shaving 5% off my time wont make the difference. Expensive pro level bikes are a status symbol for 99.5% of the riders that buy them. Fresh Bikes exists for the posers. I have more respect for someone driving a Rolls than I do some fat idiot riding a $10,000 race bike and they dont even know how to fix a flat.

just saying

But you would never 'see' an accident. You would have to wait in the woods for days before enough people rode by to get a flat. Then, you would see them get a flat. Big deal. People in FFX sometimes put sticks and logs across the trails thinking that will stop a mt. biker. More like makes it more fun. Even an average rider can ride over 8 inch branch without slowing down very much if at all. Wanna see mt. bikers crash help open up more trails gnarly we are glad to oblige all on our own!

i wouldn't accept one of those bikes if it were %50 off

they japs are continually adding incompatible parts so that you can't get a replacement or that replacements cost more than a nice used or even new bike

also: many like the 12-speeds that are "relaxed" but can be in races (in town, and paved park paths) rather than "bmx" style (for dirt, terrible if you need to make good time)

KEEP THOSE highly detailed but awfully reverse engineered new bikes

not worth a crap

12 speed - what century are you from. Japs? China makes most of the bicycles now. Are you thinking Fuji? BMX style? That is one type of bike but most people ride either some sort of Mt. Bike (Cross Country, All Mountain, Down Hill or Enduro), Road Bike or Hybrid. You sound like you must be some grumpy 70 year old that has not rode in 4 decades.

No, you do not need disc brakes. They are a newer improvement on the older brakes that worked by squeezing the rim of the wheel. Like in your car, the disc stops the bike quicker with less effort. I dont have them yet but will when I replace the bike I have.

DISK

RIM BRAKE

$10,000 for a fuckin bicycle???? Holee Shit....

For $2000, I bought everything I need at JensenUSA to build a 6" travel mountain bike that I also use on downhill courses.

Craftworks FRM125 frame, Shimano XTR gear, Hayes 8" discs front and rear, Fox rear shock and a Shiver single crown.

The only bicycles that really need disc brakes are bicycles designed and used for downhill use. I'm talking specifically about heavily reinforced mountain bikes that are literally ridden down the side of mountains usually on ski slopes that have melted for the summer. It's insane...

I thought I was balling on my $800 TREK guess I was wrong!

I'm happy with it and it's fun for me- all that matters!!

Buying a 10k+ bike is like buying a benz- it just says "look at me, I can spend money!"

I'd rather keep my $800 bike and take the other $9k and go have a wonderful vacation in it, taking the bike with me to tour the counrtyside and cruise the streets of different places instead of having a $10k bike taking a tour of vienna's red light mattress district ;)

I agree that buying a bike for 10k is excessive. On the other hand a benz is sometimes the best value. A used e320 of the proper year is a much better value than other vehicles. The parts used and engineering on some years of this car are simply outstanding. Same with something like a Town Car. Your 800 dollar bike is awesome because you like it. Homerun in my book.

If you ride a lot you might find that that 800 dollar bike breaks down more than a 1500 bike but not necessarily. In the end paying more for a bike can be tricky as an unreasonable amount of value is often placed on weight. A few pounds of weight reduction can literally cost thousands of dollars with little improvement in durability or performance of the parts.

If you do find your 800 doll beauty breaking down or you want a bike that will roll over logs and big rocks well upgrade. If you like tooling around bike paths and enjoying life that way good on you!

I will be buying a new bike soon so that will switch me from rim brakes to disc. I would agree no one 'needs' disc brakes. I would also agree that disc brakes offer the most advantage under heavy use such as downhill riding. No doubt.

Discs, however, are the direction bike braking has gone. You will be riding with discs if you buy a new bike over 500 bucks. Im told they are a great improvement. I am hoping it will be cheaper to replace pads and rotors vs. replacing the pads and whole wheel as is the case now (when the rims wear down).

Disc brakes on bikes are a major advancement. I switched about a month ago and downhill speeds are much faster. Control in general is a big step above.
