As we come up on the anniversary of the Boston bombing, let me get this off my chest – this whole ‘Boston Strong’ thing is bullshit. Don’t get me wrong, the bombers should get the death penalty, but if you look how the city (over) reacted, you will see that the city didn’t do anything ‘Strong’. Instead, the city ran scared like a city of bitches.

First, after the bombing, Boston and 5 surrounding suburbs were locked down. This wasn’t ‘shelter-in-place’, this was ‘cower in place’. A huge metropolitan area and its airports and all public transportation were shut down for 17 hours. (1am Friday until 6pm Saturday). Does requiring people to stay indoors for 17 hours with nothing additional happening sound like “Boston Strong”?

Second, after identifying the suspect in the boat and surrounding the boat with helicopters, armed vehicles, and hundreds of police officers – why couldn’t the Boston police arrest the unarmed bomber without unloading “dozens of shots into the boat”? All these shots also came after flash-bang grenades had already been thrown into the boat. Does this incompetent, heavy handed response to the unarmed bomber sound like something that is “Boston Strong”?

Finally, the door-to-door searches in Watertown were done without search warrants. While the 4th Amendment has an exception if there is “imminent danger”, police still need probable cause. Where was the imminent danger? Nothing had happened since the initial bombing and the shooting in Cambridge. Does suspending the 4th Amendment seem like something that is “Boston Strong”

Maybe in retrospect we can justify all these compromises under the “fog of war”. I also get how as Americans we want to celebrate the positives and think that everything is under control and that we will never be defeated. However the fact is, the city was in a state of terror, and hindsight has shown us that Boston’s response was not strong, but weak. So fry the remaining bomber, but don’t try to tell me that Boston has anything to be proud of.

I recently lived in Watertown for over 15 years.

They're pretty much all super-liberal authoritarian-worshiping anti-gun typically-scared suburbanites. One person I know was so happy to see the police all over the place. Several others I talked to (while this was all going on) were not even aware of the incident until late in the day. (The police tried calling everyone in a reverse-911, but it didn't quite work.

The hilarious thing is that the town is actually a hotbed of actual terrorists (al-Queda), hiding in plain sight, usually illegal immigrants from the middle east, working as (for example) taxi drivers in the Boston area.

It's a very quiet little bedroom community, comparable to Annandale. (Well, maybe a little nicer. It doesn't have illegal day laborers hanging out all over the place. But you get the idea.) Next to a major river park, close to Boston and Cambridge, access to the major roads and toll road. LOTS of mom & pop businesses, and a very small shopping mall. No McDonalds. It's pretty. I liked it (except for the politics).

The operation was a travesty, poorly conceived and executed, pretty much declaring martial law and throwing out any and all citizen rights. However, I cut the authorities a lot of slack, because this was the first time anything like this has happened in America. Hopefully it will be analyzed and studied as a model of (mostly) what not to do.

Sadly, I don't have much faith that it will have been institutionally instructional in anything other than successful tactics for martial law and community psychological response.

I don't get the whole "Watertown Strong" thing. I am friends with dozens of these people, and have encountered many hundreds of them. All they did was stay in their house and cower. What's "strong" about that? Well, they did paint an American flag on the local late-night diner. I like patriotic sentiment, so that's nice.

I guess Annandale has turned into a place of transients. Watertown is an actual small-town place. Good for commuting, but locally, it's more of a walk around place. It's also a bus hub and has several routes that go down the main drags to everywhere, stopping every couple of blocks.

Also note that Watertown (like most towns up there) is an actual legal entity, so come to think of it, maybe it's a lot more like Falls Church City.

Everything about that town and surrounding area sucks. Screw Boston and it's people.

Nobody's jealous, calm down. Like mentioned above, this sort of thing (much worse even) has happened to this area multiple times. Being the nation's capitol, this area is and has been more equipped to handle these issues. Boston is tiny, and for their size, they did alright. A few lessons learned but that's all you can do.

Boston's size comparable to other metropolitan areas is the only reason a total shutdown was even possible. No, people didn't do anything extraordinary or helpful and the effects were not as damaging as other catastrophes but a strong spirit is not a bad thing. What's the harm if it brings unity to a community that experienced hardship? Yeah, some asshole made money off of the slogan but this is America after all.
