Call a consultant. I've used "Indoc", and been pretty happy with their advice. I think it was around $100/hr. I'd think you'll be in more trouble if you try to hide it than you will be from the DUI itself.

http://indocnationalsecurity.com/

Anther option, since you'll want a lawyer anyway, is to call someone who's local and might be able to give you a good referral.

I don't know anything about these guys, but someone like this:

But if he thinks he might get off, he could blackmailed with the information.

Go with the consultant. Disclosure might be required or a good idea, regardless.

And if you think you're likely to be convicted, they'll help you plan your mitigation strategy.

LEARN SOMETHING FROM THIS!

It sounds like nobody got hurt this time, but don't ever forget this lesson, even if you are a selfish prick who's only worried about his own career.

You have a security clearance and you DON'T know how a DUI affects it? You obviously shouldn't have a security clearance.

Save our money on indoc, all the mitigating factors for the adjudicative guidelines are listed with the guidelines and can be foud through various OPM and DoD websites.

Report the DUI to your security office as required and be prepared to be interviewed by OPM. Mitigating factors here are if it is an isolated incident and if your use of alcohol is moderate in nature. Have references available who can speak to this if necessary.

Report it immediately. Hiding stuff is the worst thing you can do.

Beyond that, unless you have a pattern of alcohol abuse, I wouldn't worry about losing your clearance. People with clearances get DUIs all the time.

Get a lawyer for the DUI charge, get counseling help, get sober, take all your classes, and don't drink and drive anymore.

1. Get a DWI laywer and see what they tell you and go with their advice. They are the pros. That said they will probably tell you they will try to get the case reduced if possible. Also your lawyer may get you in ASAP right away if theres not much chance to get a not guilty verdict so when you go to court it will be wam bam and the judge will gve the norm to you lesser fine, no jail time served in PD lockup, One year license restriction , Work, doctor visit license only

2. Tell your people at work what happend dont try hideing anything ,other then things the lawyer may tell you not to talk about..Many contractors and Fed agencys have HR programs that may help you. If so and offered take it with your lawyers advice.

3. If you have a secret clearence nothing may happen until your convicted, If its a TS clearence that may be reduced to secret right away and you will be reassigned until the verdit in your case comes out. Even so you can lose any clearence just because they think you drink too much and theres nothing you can do about that if they have any proof, you dont need a DWI to prove it investigators may get info on your routine security screenings or someone could tipster you out. You may lose pay for lesser duties, that may not happen right away.Your secret clearence may be reduced to classified with loss of pay.

4. You may lose your clearence and your job . Or be reassigned if your lucky.

5. It could take several years to get back where you were..sorry drinking and security clearences are taken very seriously today.

If you drink, drive and get caught you should lose your clearance and
do time. This country trusted you and you betrayed the trust.

Calm down, fuckhead. People drink and they drive. It's unfortunate and illegal but it's not a betrayal of the country.

I drank and drove between 1977 and 1995.I quit because a buddy who got caught had to pay 10k in fines legal fees and higher insurance rates.Back in the early 90's you could buy a nice car for 10k.I wouldn't drive after 12 beers.A mans got to know his limitations.Remember the bac limit was 0.15 back in the day. Most folks hada a more laid back attitude about drinking and driving.

Depending on where you work, you maybe fired! If you signed a contract where you work, check it very carefully. At my company, being arrested (not convicted) for any crime will lead to termination because it can jeopardize your security clearance (especially a TS) and therefore your ability to do the job your were hired for. If you came in this morning and told me you were arrested for a DUI over the weekend, you would be cleaning out your desk and turning over your ID and keys before 10am! We have committed to keeping cleared staff on contracts with the US Government and we can not afford to lose a contract because you f*cked up!

That last drink turned out to be pretty expensive, huh? Get a lawyer and prepare to be paying through the nose for everything, insurance, ASAP classes, AA, etc. You might consider selling your car and taking public transportation because you will be paying dearly to drive for a long time!

Good luck!

It really depends on your job and the conditions you signed when granted your TS.

Had an employee who worked with us doing information security. She was convicted of a DUI two years into her employment with us. Depending on the level of clearance, it wouldn't have shown until she renewed. However, it's always a good thing to update your employer rather than having them find out. She was able to keep her clearance and continue employment with a letter of explanation. There is nothing that justifies drinking and driving, but she disclosed details on what happened on that evening, admitted fault in the letter and provided details on what actions she planned to take after the conviction to make sure it never happens again. Bottom line, it is illegal to drink and drive obviously..but people do make mistakes.

G'luck.

LOL---this is a huge money maker for my 18 year old son! He takes the drunken asses of family members that insist on drinking themselves into stupidity (a whole 'nother issue, trust me)home safe and sound every weekend. The ones he drives home the most all have DUI's under their belts, so they've learned the hard way

It might be a year or more before you are found out. For your own sake turn yourself over to Jesus Christ and he will protect you always.(no more drinking)

A co-worker of mine was arrested and convicted of DUI in Fairfax some time ago, all the while holding a TS with SCI. And guess what, he is still there!

Obviously, he has been much, much more responsible now and grateful for the second chance he's been given.

Of course you don't ever lie to the government about arrests and convictions. But not every arrest and conviction is grounds for the agency that granted you the clearance to revoke it. It depends on many things. From what I've seen and heard so far in the industry, the two top things that cost people their clearances are Financial issues and Infidelity.

So man up and deal with it. Have a talk with your security officer in earnest, and with total honesty. Take responsibility for your actions and demonstrate that you've changed, when you've changed.

And good luck.

'TS/SCI' is considerably higher than 'secret'. Secret clearances are a dime a dozen these days. No DUI is good and you risk your career at any level, i'd say kiss your clearance goodbye for OP.

In 2004 or so a 20-something guy I knew had a DUI conviction. He lost his TS/SCI for 3 years, but he was lucky because the company just reassigned him to a lower paying job for that period. He had IT skills that were in demand.

Steve, I don't know if you fish, but after your DUI conviction, do not book any fishing trips to Canada. A DUI makes you inadmissable to Canada. (Google if you don't believe it)

I found this out the hard way last summer. I was turned back at the border because of a DUI in 1982. That's right, 30 fucking years ago!

I imagine this policy is retaliation for some stupid shit the US does to Canadian citizens, but it what it is. The Canadian border guard said I could apply for an exception, but it takes months and costs $200.

I may apply because fishing the Canadian wilderness can't be beat.

My boss has one and got it while he had his TS (found out via the Arrest/Ticket Search!).

From my experience, all they care about with a security clearance is if you will lie about anything. They are quite tolerant about a lot of things as long as you don't lie about it.

Lie about it and get caught (even if it is something small) and they will drop you faster than a molten ball of lead.

You can start practicing this intellectually rigorous speech. Don't know if you can master it in time:

Sir, do you want fries with that?

The wife and adult daughters can start practicing: Squire, are you dating tonight, as they lean into his open Audi window showing promising boobage.

Free people don't need 150,000 gestapo types following us around. And don't give us that shit that what you do keeps us free. Just the opposite.

I don't know how that would affect a clearance, but you wouldn't pass a life style poly with that.

You could be compromised, by blackmail. That is one of the parameters judged. If you feel free enough to admit it to the gov't, then the likely hood of such information being used as blackmail wouldn't hold much sway.

But for a clearance, the best policy is to not lie, either directly or by omission. Like I said, if they catch you in a lie, your clearance chances are as dead as Julius Ceasar.

Financial issues (depending on severity) will kill your chances as you would be tempted to take a bribe. Infidelity, I have no idea. I doubt it and I haven't heard of that, but I am not an expert.

But if you are in the military, the UCMJ would apply (to adultery or infidelity with married person) and you could be in trouble. Then as a by product, lose your clearance.

Well, perhaps I'll see you in ASAP. I got my 1st DUI conviction april 23. I blew a 0.02 at the station. The trooper didn't like it. No way he was going to admit he made a mistake, so instead he wrote me up for refusal. He lost all video footage the day of trial (after my attorney requested it three times). It came down to my word against the cop's. So, I naturally pled guilty to 1st DUI for them to drop refusal charge. Now I get to drive with the interlock for 6 months...5,000 dollars later.
