FCPS needs to start school already

Fairfax County needs to start earlier. This way they wouldn't have so many problems with snow days every year since they never build in enough. The first day it reaches 32 degrees there will be a snow day cause its "too cold"

They have tried for years - the state won't allow it. It's on them. Don't like it - tell your state legislators to quit giving in to the tourism lobby and do something about it.

There's no law about it. That's just what the gub'mint tells you to protect its interests.
My daughter attends Samuel Tucker Elementary in Cameron Station. It's part of the Alexandria City Public School system. Her first day of school this year? Um yeah...LAST Thursday, August 6th, 2015. This is the only public school in the area that I am aware of that starts this early. Tucker students still have the same number of school days as all other ACPS students, but it's a modified calendar with intersessions mixed in. This is her first year there so, I can't really say whether or not I'm in favor of an early start. But, I felt compelled to mention it in the light of the OP's post.
Oh...and Tucker is still over-enrolled by 200 students this year. And while they do not permit any inbound administrative transfers from outside the school's attendance zone, students who are zoned for Tucker can seek an administrative transfer out of the school to the next closest ACPS school, however the City does not provide transportation to students who transfer out of Tucker.

Tucker got around the Kings Dominion rule because it was one of a few in NoVa that were approved for something resembling a year round schedule. It isn't simply a matter of their school calendar starting earlier and ending earlier which many around here would like to see the County adopt.
