I want to donate actual school supplies to an actual school

Back when I was poorer I used to do this every year: when Staples did their 1-cent & 5-cent sales. I'd make 5 or 6 trips and buy the limit of each cheap item and then take the whole trunkful over to an elementary school and hand it off to the office worker at the front desk.

Say whatever you want about me being cheap or whatever but it made me feel good and the stuff went to good purpose.

Well Staples doesn't do those sales anymore but I still want to do something similar and I'm making a better living so I can afford to spend a bit more. But I've moved to VA (I used to live in DC) and I'm not sure where to go. The schools around here seem much better-off than the ones in DC.

Where would you donate $100-200 worth of school supplies around here? Where would it do the most good?

If you want to go by need, for the most part east end of the county schools have more poor kids than west end of the county. Annandale HS pyramid schools have more need than Chantilly HS pyramid schools.

Still, though, in almost every ES there are some kids whose parents don't have a lot and could use a little help. I'd suggest buying regular pencils instead of mechanical pencils, and the cheap regular pencils are not a good deal. They're from china and the "lead" breaks all the time. Spending another buck for better pencils is a good idea.

Take it to the ES and tell the secretary it's for the poor kids and ask her to put it in the counselor's mailbox. The counselors know what kids are struggling.

If you want to buy general office supplies to help out teachers, good quality shipping tape, 3M heavy duty shipping tape, and good quality paper towels are much appreciated.

Good for you for helping out.

London Towne ES in Centreville would be a good school to donate supplies. My wife is a teacher there and she spends quite a bit of money on supplies for her students.

Any school inside the beltway in Annandale. Annandale High, Poe or Holmes Middle, Columbia or Weyanoke or Lynbrook Elementary. Multiple condos & apartments with section 8 here.

Some community centers might have 'fill a backpack' programs. Try Lorton Community Action Center

Coates in Herndon.

Also, some of the food pantries would probably know where the best use of the supplies would be.

Please include a map of how to get back to Mexico in every free backpack. Lets see, free breakfast, free lunch, free school supplies, free after school day care,I guess it wont happen.

Good for you OP. I used to contribute fairly regularly to my local schools, but recently I have become rather jaded. My suggestion would be to donate to contact specific teachers about donating supplies they need for their classrooms rather than giving it to the school and have it frittered away.

You are a good person. I'd suggest that before you buy, look at an on line supply list first. ES ask for specific items these days. All ES seem to run out of tissues, paper towels and glue sticks by Christmas.

Just do a little research first so nothing is wasted.

Schools don't need school supplies. Parents buy them and PTAs cover for those in need.

There is a need at Gatehouse for finer fountain pens, Clairefontaine stationary, Rhodia notebooks, finer leather agendas, as well as Tumi briefcases and bags.

Please FedEx donated items as individual drop off deliveries are discouraged.

look at www.DonersChoose.org

Enter your zip code to see teaches' needs near you. Then you can decide which if any you would like to support.

I once went to Dogwood Elementary School with boxes of brand new pencils and art supplies, and the secretary at the office looked at me like I was crazy.

That's why the FCPS is doing so badly, it's run by horrible administrators and horrible teachers/principals/school secretaries.

They're all overpaid and not doing a good job. It's a joke that you Democrats threaten to cut sports because us Fairfax County working taxpayers aren't paying enough to support their fat salaries and fat pensions.

Look, fellow taxpayers, these jokesters work for say 20-25 years, and retire at 50 years old with a lifetime pension.

This is why Democrat-run Detroit went bankrupt, and had to be rescued by fiscal conservatives.

I have no respect for the FCPS, or any of their employees.
