Wasn't this the place that had the Ebola virus outbreak? I thought they burnt the place down?

I used to ice skate by here as a kid and I remember my dad told me about them coming in and killing all the monkeys. I didn't really understand at the time but I recall feeling bad for them!

Reston virus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reston_ebolavirus

Reston virus (abbreviated RESTV) was first described in 1990 as a new "strain" of Ebola virus (EBOV), a result of mutation from Ebola virus.[1] It is the single member of the species Reston ebolavirus, which is included into the genus Ebolavirus, family Filoviridae, order Mononegavirales.[2] Reston virus is named after Reston, Virginia, US, where the virus was first discovered.

RESTV was discovered in crab-eating macaques from Hazleton Laboratories (now Covance) in 1989. This attracted significant media attention due to the proximity of Reston to the Washington, DC metro area, and the lethality of a closely related Ebola virus. Despite its status as a level-4 organism, Reston virus is non-pathogenic to humans, though hazardous to monkeys;[3][4] the perception of its lethality was confounded due to the monkey's coinfection with Simian hemorrhagic fever virus (SHFV).[5]

Post-Reston
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reston_ebolavirus

Following the test at the CDC campus in DeKalb County, two of the monkeys who had survived Reston virus infection were infected with a very large dose of the Ebola virus in an effort to produce an Ebola vaccine. One of the two monkeys remained resistant; the second died.[5]

The physical building in which the outbreak occurred was demolished on 30 May 1995 and a new building constructed in its place. This facility, which is part of the Isaac Newton Square office park, at 1946 Isaac Newton Sq W, became a KinderCare, then became a Mulberry Child Care and preschool center as of 2007, and as of 2009 was once again a KinderCare.[17]

Reston virus reemerged in Italy in 1992, and again in a monkey export facility in the Philippines in 1996.

On 11 December 2008, pigs from farms slightly north of Manila, Philippines tested positive for the virus. The CDC and the World Health Organization are investigating.[18] On 23 January 2009, Philippine health officials announced that a hog farm worker had been infected with the virus. Although the man was asymptomatic and the source of the infection is uncertain, this could represent the first case of pig-to-human transmission of Reston virus - a fact that could cause concern, as pigs may be able to transmit more deadly diseases to humans. The situation is undergoing further investigation.[19]

I worked for Hazleton then. The place where it happened was a quarantine facility. The main campus was as described above up rt seven right past the access rd. It was a fun place to work. We had internal softball and volleyball leagues. Great trips.

But, the management handled this and other things badly. They were eventually bought by Corning and then became Covance. They paid for my Masters but we came to work one Friday and they sold our department without telling anyone.

The Hazelton/Covance buildings are all torn down. It's such prime real estate, but I've heard that the ground maybe contaminated.

We don't call them "monkey houses" anymore. The preferred term is "Section 8 Housing". Please make a note of this.

Non-pathogenic to humans and was grossly sensationalize in media, books and the community at the time. Obviously having a monkey house so close to large populations is not the best idea and it was only a matter of time before it was moved but there was never any threat to the public.

"but I've heard that the ground maybe contaminated"

You have heard wrong. Also hear the story of the albino deers that lived behind the research facility as well?

Here is locals claiming to go into the old monkey house after the cdc cleaned it up. Cool pictures.

I remember taking my 8 year old daughter over to this facility to watch the monkeys that were allowed outside to climb around in a circular area outside the facility. The concrete moat & tree allowed the public to get close and view the monkeys climbing around. This was prior to the outbreak.

There was another facility near where Fox Mill intersects with Lawyers/Reston Parkway. Most of it was torn down and redeveloped, but one of the buildings appears to stand as it was back then.

You act like blacks are incapable of being/or are not racist. Come on. They are probably more racist than whites are. That's fine. It just is the way it is. Animals in the wild do not get along...why should humans be any different, regardless of race?

It starts at 6:42, but the real action is 7:06-7:42. Look at that & tell me they're not macaques.

They "nuked" the testing house with chemicals
on hot plates for a month or two and then leveled it.

It was in the book The Hot Zone.

It was completely sterile when they were done - no danger

I don't remember the Reston virus. I do remember the fire at the Reston Zoo that killed two giraffes.

-I worked for Hazleton when it happened. It was a quarantine building. They bugged out and did sterilize the place. Left a mess behind with vials labeled with the company logo on them broken all over the floor. That was the way it was done by their management. Corning bought them and it became Covance. The main campus was at 9200 Leesburg which became a EPA Superfund location that is finally being built upon. The quarantine building sat empty for several years. The person who bought it got it for 1/3 of its value. The Hot Zone author later visited my next lab for reserch while writing the book.
