The U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department have concluded their investigations and cleared the scene at the Navy Yard after it was placed on lockdown at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday.
There were initial reports of a shooting, but these reports were never confirmed, and CBS News is reporting that officials have told them that there was no shooting. The U.S. Navy has also confirmed that they have found no evidence of a shooting.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowswer, Police Chief Cathy Lanier and other law enforcement officials will hold a news conference at around 10:45 a.m.
WTOP's Neal Augenstein reports that “There is uncertainty; there is obviously fear,” particularly in light of the mass shooting in 2013, but exactly what happened is still not clear.
“We’ve heard lots of different theories,” says NBC News Justice Department correspondent Pete Williams, but his best information tells him that the initial report came from a 911 call from someone who thought they heard gunshots. An initial sweep and a subsequent detailed sweep, he adds, has turned up no indication of this.
