Fairfax County Drops Grading Penalty for Absences

I don't get it...changed the grading scale, now they are taking away any aversion to skipping. What's with making everything easier at FCPS? Maybe the kids should, um, say, not skip school? Let's teach them that we are going to hold their hands all the way until they are 18. Brilliant.

I just think this is pathetic. Keep maintaining that asinine zero tolerance drug rule too.

They are preparing them for college, where attendence in most classes is optional

... and we'll end up with a generation of self-righteous assholes who think the world should change to fit their needs instead of the other way around.

The world is getting dumber, and these changes prove it.

End up? I think they're already here.

I don't think it's all that bad. I think as long as they are passing their tests, they should get good grades for their classes. I even think nightly homework is stupid (with math and foreign languages being exceptions).

Edit: Added foreign language to list of exceptions

there was more to the absence penalty then meets the eye. if you are 10 minutes late to a class then you recieve an unexc. absence. classes are 90 minutes long so basically if your 10 minutes late then you are considered "not there" even though you could be sitting in class for the majority of the time. I recieved a B+ in one of my classes that i took in the morning and for whatever reasons i had come in 10 minutes late 3 times that quarter and was failed. I had done all of my work and learned all the material and achieved a high grade yet i was failed. this type of thing happens to so many people and as a result their gpa drops dramatically. it is an extreme punishment to fail somebody for being late or missing class when they do the work and pass the tests. Fairfax county finally realized this and made the change. Now insead of handing out F's left and right to kids missing class, the schools will have more appropriate punishments such as detentions, saturday school, and taking away parking passes. these all seem like the traditional highschool punishments that have always worked. fairfax county was wrong for taking away the grades that students rightly earned as a means to get them to be more punctual.

Here's the lesson - punctuality counts in "real life". As do the rules of the establishment you are in. You better believe if you're late to a job 3 times "for whatever reason" where punctuality counts, you're gonna get shitcanned.

I must not be giving myself enough credit for getting out of FCPS with a 3.7 GPA. I mean, we had the old grading scale, the unexcused absence rules, and all the other "unfair disadvantages" the system had to offer. It's a fucking goddamn miracle.

EDIT: Bad grammar correction - Thanks FCPS. If only your grading scale was easier, I'd be smarter.

In the real world that I and the rest of the adults live in, if you're late to work or otherwise break clearly established rules that your employer has given you, you get fired.

When you get fired, you have no money, which means no rent payments, no car payments, no alcohol, and no food. Your girlfriend nags at you that you never take her out anymore, and ends up leaving your broke ass.

You're going to be part of that world before you realize it. One of the best skills you can learn now while you have the chance is to learn from your mistakes. If you don't, you're going to grow up and do something stupid, and people on the internet are going to call you worm food.

The solution is: stop being late to class.

If you are at such a job, you can usually call your boss and say Hey, my car's battery is dead, im going to be 15 mins late to work. And usually they are ok with it. Whereas in FCPS, i dont think they cared if you had a good reason, you still got marked absent. And if your car's battery is breaking down every monday morning, you can say hey boss i'd love to get a new one but i cant afford it with this salary

Who the hell gets fired for being late? Maybe someone who hasn't graduated high school and is chronically late. We're talking 3 times in 190 days.

Notwithstanding the attendance policy, you certainly deserve an "F" in English class.

Learn to write in paragraphs and utilize proper capitalization and spelling.

The "text message" and "LOL" generation is creating a mockery of our language.

Really? never late to work around this area? You must work at home, where you don't have to worry about metro pile-ups or delays, trash trucks upside down on the roadway, cows breaking away from the farm, late toy pick-up for the overnight VDOT road crews or overheated Fairfax Connectors sitting on shoulder.

I had an eighth grade English teacher at Kilmer who would mark you absent if you didn't have TWO pencils or entered her class at any point after the period bell rang.

I had gym just before her class, and my locker was in the science hall, so I had to go from the gym/shop class hall, all the way to the back of the school, to the very end of the science hall to my locker, to get my books and other supplies, then all the way to the front of the school to the language hall, and halfway down that hall to her class in 5 minutes.

Luckily, this was back in the age of reason. My mother talked to the principal and had the F changed to my proper grade based on test scores and homework assignments.

Things have changed so much in 30 years with all the "zero tolerance" bullshit.

I think going to a 10 point grading scale is retarded, but failing a kid because his class schedule puts him at opposite ends of the school and his locker at yet another extreme end is just being blindly obedient to a policy.

If the kid was actually skipping class, or was late because he was having a smoke in the bathroom, or something, then yes, fail the little shit. But there has to be some measure of reason -- if there's a valid explanation, don't count it, if there is no excuse, fail the shit head.

I skipped school everyday in HS and graduated with a 1.87. I went to NOVA for two years, finished up at GMU, and now I have a good job. No employer has ever asked me what my GPA was in HS.
I wouldn't change a thing about my HS experience, or my lack there of.

wrong, thats an unexcused tardy, congrats for spreading false info, you can rack up many of them before you fail. try learning to be somewhere when you are supposed to, students who come to class when they want to grow up to be the asshole adults who show up for work late and are the first ones out the door at quitting time

Let's go ahead and keep making things easier for our kids so they don't have to learn as much. What's the worst that can happen?

You know what I do with my oldest at the start of every school year? When he fucks off and doesn't turn in an assignment, I make him do it, turn it in and get a zero. He says "What's the point, I'm not going to get credit anyway". To which I answer "then maybe you should have done it earlier so you could have gotten credit. Now it's just the principle of the matter. Do it, show it to me and turn it in.".

It takes about a full grading period to sink in, but it sinks in.

Fuck making it easy for kids. Life's hard, better learn it early so you don't become a 25 year old basket case who can't deal with "pressure".

It sounds like you have the desire and committment to raise an intelligent, well-adjusted child that will be prepared for the real world when it becomes time to take his place in society.

In the real world, life is a sliding scale.

If you are a top sales person, and bring in accounts right and left, you can be late all you want.

As a matter of fact, most are. Don't show up to sales meetings, etc...they are out selling and getting sh** done, instead of trying to kiss a** by showing up on time to sales meetings.

If you are the boss, and your division is doing well, you can be late all you want.

If you are a sh***y sales person, and you don't bring in any business, you will hang on for a little while if you are always to work on time, but sooner or later, in any efficient business, you will get canned.

So it should be with school and grades.

If you can get good grades by showing up when you want, then great.

If you can't get good grades by showing up when you want, then you should probably buckle down and get to class on time.

Are they going to give good grades if test scores and homework sucks, but you show up to class on time?

Probably not.

So don't penalize those who can do well showing up when they want.

Very real world.

You also have to feel sorry for Buck Education, Eric Jensen, Flip Flippen, Tara Brach and all the other "consultants" feeding off FCPS. When FCPS collapses no more money for these scammers.

It will be said, FCPS graduates won't even be able to work at McDonald's because they can't speak Spanish. Some will end up as Backpage escorts. Some will end up as petty criminals.

I can't even begin to think what a useless person like Karen Garza will do post-FCPS, go back to Texas and raise cattle?

Here's the problem with the show up when you want idea for students: teachers are then supposed to catch all the absent kids up after schoool. When at least ten kids per day are absent, that becomes ridiculous pretty quickly.
