WASHINGTON — Residents of Fairfax County who have kept license plates on their cars from Maryland or other states should prepare for a costly crackdown: County leaders are responding to complaints about the number of cars regularly parked in many neighborhoods overnight without Virginia plates.

The Fairfax County Board Tuesday asked for changes to a law that currently fines car owners who fail to properly register their cars a one-time $250 fee. The board wants that fine to be charged annually, on top of the existing $100 “no-plate tax” that was introduced in fiscal year 2010.

This is a seriously dum-dum law, strictly for generating revenue$, and they can all lick me. Why not go after real criminals instead of stupid xtra licen$e plate fee$?

I would much rather they go after aggressive drivers and tailgaters. Fine them big time with points.....get the revenue the right way.
Get more camera's for drivers running red lights.

Tax evasion IS a real crime, being committed by real criminals. If you are happy knowing that you pay taxes and others refuse to, so be it. I think they used the wrong words by saying it will generate revenue. They should have focused on the fact that people are committing tax evasion, pure and simple, and that they should be forced to register their vehicles properly or have them impounded until they do so. The fine is only a temporary fix (and revenue generator). The tax money is used for things we all may benefit from, so I'm not ok paying my property tax while others refuse to. They really should be charged with tax evasion.

Can I move to MD, WV, NC or any other state and keep my VA tags and be free of prosecution? No.

So, why da' fuck should non-military be permitted to move here from another state, park their cars with out-of-state tags and be free of prosecution?

The police used to keep a lid on alot of this stuff but they did away with the personal property tax decal although they still charge you for it.

My shitty townhouse community is centreville is loaded with shifty Koreans with DC and MD tags on the BMWs and Mercedes. One asshole in there had an old cadillac with Ontario (as in Canada) tags on it for 9 months.

The County does zero enforcement but assesses my vehicle for the entire year based on what its worth January 1 of that year, bunch of dickholes. Then they hiked the assessed value a couple of years ago saying that used cars were worth more a couple of years ago.

Republican Governor Gilmour started phasing the car tax out in 1999 but ol' weasel face Warner stopped it.

The Tags are not important. The law says the owner of the vehicle must pay property tax in the jurisdiction where it is parked or garaged. It is very easy to report the tax cheats.

Aggressive drivers???? Distracted drivers with their face in their phone is the real scourge. Pay attention! The light's green!
