Carolina Bros is Horrible. They Have like two options for bbq and a couple dinky sides.....You get a baby's portion of food for like 10 bucks.....not even that great of food and you feel so unsatisfied....bbq is all about big platters and sides that fill you up. I do not recommend Carolina Bros...

I agree with the person above about Allmans on route 1...that is some seriously good bbq and great sides.....If only they were closer......I give that place two thumbs up...

The only good bbq NOVA had was a roadside weekend bbq place called Reddy's off 29 toward Gainesville. They no longer operate but that was very good bbq and great side dishes as well for a great price.

I have never tried Dickie's bbq...ill give it a try soon...but most chain bbq joints are not the greatest...fingers crossed

Right Across the Wilson Bridge in PG County off Indian Head south where Sunny Brook Tavern is Oxen Hill Just a bit down from Sunny Brook on the right is a smoke BBQ Joint. I have got some great ribs and sides there. They dont even open up till afternoon and people are waiting for them. It takes time to BBQ a good rib and thus when they open thay have a bunch ready and a bunch of customers too. Side were greens , mac and cheese , sweet potatoes.corn bread others.

Down the road a little more is Harley Davidson Oxen Hill, call them and see if the BBQ joint is still open and get the hours or the places name. Its been a couple years that I was there.

I passed by there today on Indian Head wanted to stop in but did not have time..Damm.

There's a guy with a smoker at the Shell Station on rte 7 in Loudoun. I think the area is called Lake Cedar, near the Fairfax Parkway. He works weekends seasonally. I think it's time for him to reappear.

Allmans was mentioned. Yes I have got a couple slabs there over the years and they were good. Its been three years since I was there. Their cole slaw is legend. A lady worked there 45 years last I heard when I was there she made the slaw sauce. Its a traditional southern boiled cole slaw sauce, this is made with egg yoks sugar vinegar and boiled. It was excellent. Some of the best slaw I have ever ate. Its a small place inside with a lunch counter, they have sliced pork and other sandwichs too.

BBQ World in Burke was good. I went there 20 years and talked many times with the owner. he smoked everything in a brick open pit with wood, something thats few and far in strip joint BBQ places, even road side joints today unless your in N.C. I liked his chopped Pork sandwhich and his slaw home made and tangy. His ribs were very good.

But as said..Gone now.

Johnny Boys down in La Plata Md. had a good wood fire BBQ rib, about 15 years ago they slipped. and there ribs got tough and rubbery. Oh Well, there was also a place in P.W. in Yorkshire area that had great ribs, they sold several years ago to Kopreans and I heard they could bnot duplicate the Q but that may have changed if there still there.

The rest are all "Just the Rest" These others are and were "The Best".

Willards is a good BBQ Oven cooked but good. Good potato salad, slaw. They also have a smoked BBQ meatloaf dinner with real mashed taters, greens. It was good but too much smoke flavor for me in the meatloaf.

First time I went there I was at a boat show at the expo center. I saw a BBQ for sale in their food court. Then I saw a guy with a big plate of what looked like really good bbq. Where did you get that I asked. Willards down the road not here was the answer.

I haven't been to any of the BBQ places around the area other than REd, Hot, and Blue. I only like their potato salad. At Xmas time, on of my uncle's and his son's cook 3 pigs down in SC and I usually bring some home with me and freeze it. Over the past couple years though, if I want pulled pork BBQ, I do it myself on my kamado style grill with a pork shoulder. Eight hours and a couple hours to rest in a warmed up cooler. I have acouple types of vinegar based sauces from SC that I used on the pork after it is pulled.

If I want ribs, same thing, I get a rack or 2 from Herris Teeter of the baby back ribs and do those with a rub and then I from there, I tend to do half the rack with sauce and keep the other side dry. Been using apple juice for spraying during the cooking and they get this great mahoganny look to them from all the carmelized sugar in the juice.

Sweet Fire Donna in Alexandria by Patent and Trademark is good, as is Rocklands near where the Telegraph cutover from 495 hits Duke street. I know a lot of people like Dickey's at 495 and 66, but I think it is too dry.

Dickeys is really really good. But the one in ffx by walmart is starting to suck. Thankfully, there's another one opening in Centerville by noodles & co/panda express. Their fb page says June and a different owner.

They also sell really cool desserts and DIY take home stuff in a fridge that is fresh made.

Rocklands in Alexandria is pretty damn good, and I've spent enough time in NC to know. Only one place better I know, guy named Magic Mike who works the farmer's market on sundays in The Planes. It's a drive but outstanding - make sure you try his Pit Ham.

Regarding :Willard's: The restaurant's full name is "Willard's Real Pit BBQ."

I have two questions about Willards:

1) WHERE'S THE PIT?

2) If there's a pit somewhere on the premises, where's the stacked wood for smoking?

No Pit at Willards, Probably the same type of oven smoke injector like Red Hot Blue. BBQ World as I said above had the real pit but there gone. I dont know if Allmans in Fredericksburg has a real Pit and they have been around 50 + years.

Real Pit BBq is hard to find round here, unless you do it at home.

Johnny Boys in So Md had the real thing but something happened and they started making smokey rubber ribs 15 years ago. NWAS

That's what I thought, but thought that my memory might have been at fault. I went there twice. First time impressions? Bad sides (the collards were cold) and the pulled pork was miserable. Gave them a second chance the next time I was out there for a gun show... thought that maybe my first visit was just an off day. SSDD. Now that I know they don't even have a pit, but call themselves "Real Pit BBQ," my opinion of them as baked & faked pseudo-cue is cemented.

The "Ben's Whole Hog" era was short-lived, but a glorious time for northern VA fans of real barbecue. (And I, for one, thought that the nice people who bought him out toward the end of the restaurant's run actually did a good job of it. I think that some of the customers were too small-minded to accept that Asians could do Ben's pork justice). I mourned its closing.

Ben's comeback with "Absolute BBQ" was great, but I haven't been to Manassas in a while and heard that he closed shop yet again. Does anybody know?

Dixie Bones is about the only game in town. It's good. Sometimes great. But it's no Ben's.

Ben's Whole Hog was wonderful. I'm sorry you missed out on it and its redux with Absolute BBQ. Barbecue lovers in the area often issue caveats like "it's good barbecue, for Virginia." Ben's was great barbecue, period, and its product could hold its own against the best barbecue I've had in the Carolinas and deep South.

Did Yorkshire close? That was an institution for at least 60 years.

Anyone remember Redskin Roy Jeffersons BBQ place in Chantilly or Centerville, Never tried it and hear its also gone.

Dixie Pig on Rt 1 was a oven BBQ place also. No pit there I ever saw but they sold lots of BBQ. It was OK. There meatloaf was very good with mashed taters gravy rolls and green beans. And several other special wre good too.

And the young waitress "Blondie" who was there for years..started when she was about 17 then went to Magic Skillet on Rt 1. "Hey Blondie get me a beer" the drunk called out.

I think the manager or owner was Mr Bean or something I remember him as overweight smoked like a stove nervous and sitting on a stool breaking out in a sweat. Poor fellow had heart trouble and died and the Dixie Pig shut down soon after. Lots of memories of the Dixie Pig..
