Coyotes are more scared of you. Not to say they're harmless, but they aren't wolves. I've run across them and they've run away. Just don't follow them

We saw an Old World Golden Jackal near Burke Lake last fall, the thing looked ready to attack.

Very likely a misidentification but if you're worried, I've run into tons of jackals and their temperament is pretty much the same as coyotes - not much to worry about. Also run over a few - folks in africa fucking hate them and hit them whenever possible.
