It is rumorred that on the 2016 ballot will be an option for Northern Virginia to secede from the state of Virginia. It would include Fairfax, Arlington, Prince William, Alexandria, City of Falls Church, City of Fairfax, and Loudon.

It won't work. The Constitution requires that the state approve any division or transfer of territory. I don't see the General Assembly voting to give up the cash cow of NoVa.

It has happened in the past. A number of states gave up western lands before the Constitution was approved. Georgia gave up its western territory in 1800. Massachusetts gave up Maine around 1620 and Texas gave up a large portion of its northern and western territory in 1850. The separation of West Virginia from Virginia was approved by a puppet government loyal to the U.S.

Actually, I think we should get the Virginia tag and force the rest of the state to be Sourthern Virginia. I am not changing my mailing addres for the 6 or 7 people that live down south.

Perhaps we could convince Southern Virginia to take a one time cash payment. They could put in a trust much like the Alaska Permanent Fund.

I would like to see Northern Virginia secede from the state. However, I would like to be in Florida by the time this happens.

Once Northern Virginia secedes, and takes with it all of its self important, government contracting, BMW driving, can't see past the end of my nose yuppie douchebags, I would like to see it attempt to secede from the union as a whole. As a result, I'd like the US government to test out a couple of it's aging nuclear warheads and turn The Sovereign Northern Virginia into glass, just to set an example for other states or city-states looking to secede.

Now, in all seriousness I don't want to see anyone killed or necessarily harmed. But maybe we can find a way for Northern Virginia to secede from the state, then the union...and somehow pluck it off of the map and set it adrift somewhere in the North Atlantic?

Quite possibly, when the area gets to keep the $0.75/dollar of state income tax revenue Richmond currently keeps. The better question is whether the rest of the state could pay for those things.

Lord Fairfax is based outside of NoVA. Their base is in Frederick County and there are no campuses here.

I vote "yes" only if it carves Manassas and Dale City out, they are not NoVA.

First of all, Northern Virginia is economically prosperous because of its location adjacent to the United States capital, Washington, D.C. The nation's capital is located there because Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, both non-Northern Virginia Virginians, struck a deal with Alexander Hamilton that would re-locate the nation's capital to a southern location. So without those non-Northern Virginia Virginia statesmen there wouldn't be a financial abundance in Northern Virginia. The complete arrogance about Northern Virginia's greatness is entirely misplaced--it's wealthy because of Washington, D.C., not because there is something special about the people of Fairfax, Loudoun, or Arlington.

Second of all, Northern Virginia is more prosperous than suburban Maryland, largely because of the economic, fiscal, and regulatory policies that have come out of Richmond compared to those that have come out of Annapolis. You cut off Richmond and all of a sudden you end up like the Maryland suburbs of D.C.--less prosperous.

On a similar but slightly different note, the idea that Northern Virginia residents would complain about their "subsidy" to the rest of Virginia is laughable if it weren't so grotesquely arrogant. No, if you are attending school for the first time, you are not already highly educated. Also, just because affluent kids from wealthy families attend a school, does not mean it is a good education.

If Northern Virginia created a new university so residents wouldn't have to go to VT or UVA or WM, etc., they would need an entirely new faculty, newly established programs, etc. It would not have national or even regional prestige as the new university has no name value.

Upon further analysis I have concluded that the fauqier county and Manasas city will not be juristictionrd the state of northern Virginia.

Those two towns do not have the historical significance that the state of northern Virginia requires.

What the heck does the rest of VA actually do to "balance" things out with NOVA? Those places don't influence this area much if at all. They're mostly a drain on our economy up here, sucking away our tax dollars. Most of them don't contribute a damn thing to this state.
