You're kidding, right? One of the greatest? Just because you're one of the first at doing something does not ALSO mean you're one of the greatest...Bruce kept the bottom end of cream together but, Clapton was the greatness of that band.

And then there's my playing, of course...

I'm amazed Ginger Baker has outlived him.

No, he's not kidding. Clapton was the glamor-boy front-man and an excellent guitarist. Jack Bruce was not only God on the bass, but the creative force that drove the band. There were but a few who could hold a candle to him. Waters, Jones, Entwhistle, and McCartney get notice because of the bands they played in. Jack Bruce gets notice because he was Jack Bruce.

Iron Maiden = Noise. Appeal to meth heads and others verging on serious psychosis. Cream = Music. Appeal to pot heads and others with an actual intellect and conscience.

Jones and Entwistle...I'll give you. But, I have footage of Roger Waters ASKING David Gilmour to tune his bass for him. Now, Rog was a serviceable player and more than made up for his lack of virtuosity with his writing but, you CANNOT be considered amongst the greats if you can't tune your own instrument...

Geddy Lee
Jaco Pistorius
Stanley Clarke
Cliff Burton
Chris Squire
Stuart Hamm

Geddy Lee WISHES he was John Entwistle and so did Jack when he was still alive! lol

And you thought it was because he didn't know how? What a dumb fuck.

Maybe if you hadn't misspelled Pastorius. Maybe you should just go around wearing one of those Bill Engvall signs.

Uses a pick, disqualified.

And if Jeff Berlin isn't on the list, it isn't a list.

There's a cliche in music that the bass player is a guitarist who can't play guitar. This may be the case in a lot of situations, but Bruce was a superb bass player who understood "less is more." As much as I like The Ox and Geddy Lee, not every song requires a bass on speed. And when Bruce started out, nobody gave the bass much credence in rock and roll. He was a pioneer and should be revered as much. Otherwise, it's like discounting Bo Diddley for not coming up with Bohemian Rhapsody. Different times. Different talent.

Has anyone ever placed McCartney or Waters on a best bass player list other than cutest and ugliest?

What you'll find is that both of them appear somewhere on almost everybody's list of great bass players. Odd that you would post and not know that.

Was Jack Bruce born in NOVA? Did he die in NOVA? Did Cream ever play in NOVA?

Wrong forum, OP...holy fuck what a shit dick you are.

Any list with either of them on it is invalid. The Beatles were the world's greatest pop band, getting them on lists based on fame alone, but none of them were great musicians. Pink Floyd is nothing without Waters, but he doesn't match up with the greats like Entwhistle.

I bought a Cream CD in Nova, it was pretty lame, these guys were highly over-rated.

Listen to Roundabout from YES and then tell me all the d-bag bassists from glam metal, alternative, grunge, hip hop, etc, are better than Chris Squire because they used their fingers instead of a pick. Fucking morons.

As for McCartney and Waters, they were both great song writers who happened to play bass. Can't speak for Waters, but McCartney took up bass because George Harrison was a better guitarist than he was. Also, McCartney found it easier to compose on the bass while on the road.

Off the top of my head I can think of bass licks from John Entwislte, Geddy Lee, Stanley Clarke, Cliff Burton, Chris Squire, Stuart Hamm, Steve Harris, and many others. I've seent hem all in concert and they are all awesome.

I can't recall a single bass lick from Cream and the music is tolerable. So he does not go on the list.

By the way, that fag from Pink Flyd was not a great bass player, either.

Roundabout is not hard to play, any beginner "bassist" who uses a pick can play it.

Weenies need to grow up. All manner of well-known bassists have used a pick. It's a tool, not a crutch.

Yep. No iconic bass lines from Jack Bruce. Morons.

Also, Roundabout is not an easy bass riff for beginners. It stands up to anything Geddy Lee or John Enstwistle have done.

John entwistle used a pick sometimes. But just watch him effortlessly destroy bass lines and you quickly realize why he is held in such high esteem. He was the quiet one, and it's the quiet ones you have to watch out for.

The only person to be named more than once as Bass Player magazine's Bassist of the Year has been Victor Wooten. He's been named three times. Rolling Stone also named him as one of their Top Ten Bassists of All-Time. That's All-Time.
