Average starting salary for a software engineer in the DC/NoVA area?
Posted by: CS Major ()
Date: September 27, 2014 10:27PM

I'm a computer science major at a top 5 in-state VA school. I have 3 summers of internship experience in the field. What kind of salary range should I expect to make out of college in the DC/MD/NoVA area?

Deal with dumb end users then commit suicide at the mean age of 35 because they finally understand the job fucking sucks.

It's like a biology major, It sounds good until you sit in a lab and pipette all fucking day for the rest of your life.

You should start making $120k and by 5 years, $300k. If not, you are failure.

It has nothing do do with your qualifications. It has much more to do with how innovative you are at recognizing issues and thinking outside the box to apply process improvement.

I don't entirely agree. Companies would rather hire someone with experience. But obviously you do have to be a problem-solver. I would imagine going through a rigorous CS program and gaining relative experience in the field would help you with those processes. But yeah I suppose some people could be in the same situation and just not have those skills. But I find it hard to believe.

Nigger please. try getting a job with no qualifications, let me know how that works for ya.
It will work if you start your own company.

You'll probably start out around 60k. How much you make depends on how good you are. Also, once you gain experience you'll make more contracting yourself out than you would as an employee.

Pretty generic, what aspect of IT specifically?

Without knowing, I would say in the 60-80k range would be entry level.

if white hard worker: mysteriosly poisoned, then jailtime, and false bills from fx co gov. never paid, ever.

if illegal or political family: 3x-15x min wage, depends on power of corrupt political family; and hires out the work to peru and hw to china: does not actually do (much of any) work they are supposedly getting paid for.

Like anything around here, you'll make more if you have a clearance. In my personal experience, capable AND cleared software engineers do very well in this area.

Where were your internships? Why not get a job there?

Scrounge glassdoor.com for details.

Try to look at places that favor (and interview for) actual capability. Microsoft, Google, Amazon, etc. I know they all have a presence in the DC area, but you might find better opportunity with them out west.

It is hard to give actual numbers here because the individual usefulness varies so much and it is all twisted around by clearances.

Since you're starting out, I recommend that you try to get a clearance. You might have to pay some dues and get paid low until you can prove yourself, but those dues are much less if you're cleared.

source: I work at one of the big three listed above. I have interviewed many engineers in my field (not software) and found that all the qualifications are meaningless when they fail miserably at the tech screen and can't answer common sense "how to do any fucking job" kind of questions.

You won't get any government IT job around here without qualifications. Give me a break.

That's funny. I have no formal training whatsoever but I work in a gov't IT job that I was hired for after demonstrating that I could solve a major problem in their organization with a simple software design.

Then you were hired based on experience/quals otherwise or were there in some other capacity beyond formal training. You're not likely walking in off the street without.

Even less of a chance at contractors since they need to meet minimum paper quals in RFPs and for other proposal purposes. Doesn't matter what you know or how good you are.
