Craigslist rent scam
Posted by: smarter than craig ()

A friend just advertised her condo in Reston for rent on Craigslist, someone made a duplicate of the ad and took deposits on her place. The reverse of something that happened to a family friend a couple months ago in Arlington where they made a large first month/last month deposit on a place and never got their cash back, now their kids are going to a shit school in Baileys Crossroads while they save up the cash to move again. Broke two rules on that one, besides "never use craigslist", they violated the "never trust a Russian whore" axiom.

I don't get it: usually you check out the place, and give $$ to a person that showed it, or whoever he/she designated. Craigslist or not, why would anyone give money to someone else?

People actually will put money on a place they haven't walked though? Losers deserve to be swindled out of their money.

They did visit the site, I don't have the details of how the crooks had access, but there was more than one visit. Seems like a well planned scam.

To be fair, something like this happened in Maryland a few months ago:

A Prince George's County woman pleaded guilty yesterday renting out a vacant house she didn't own for $1,650 a month.

According to the Office of the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney, 31-year-old Shannon Lee claimed she bought the house, which was in foreclosure, at a tax sale, but couldn't provide proof of ownership.

During the course of the investigation, police found that all tax payments on the house were current and the house had not been sold at a tax sale. Police also learned that the cell phone number Lee had given to the homeowner was a number for Delta Exclusive Reality, where Lee was listed as an agent. While the company had a physical address in Largo, its mailing address was a P.O. box in Clinton.

Officers were able to obtain a search warrant for Lee’s residence, her personal vehicle and the P.O. box. Evidence recovered proved that Lee had illegally entered the house and changed the locks so she would be able to rent it for her own personal gain. Lee had been charging the tenant, $1,650 a month to live in the $225K house.

Lee allegedly ran the scheme with three other properties and has three other cases pending.

Shannon Lee is a scream...

More on this story:
A Prince George's County woman will spend six months in prison for renting out foreclosed homes she didn't own.

Shannon Lee pleaded guilty on forgery and burglary charges last month, but she didn't show up to her initial sentencing July 11 -- prosecutors said she forged a doctor's note.

Lee would break into as many as nine foreclosed homes, forge deeds and rent them.

The other part of the trick is the refund check that bounces.

If it was a foreclosure I could see that, but your friends condo?

So the people broke into her condo to show them around? Unlikely.

Two stories, I don't have the full details on either of them, one was someone ripped off trying to rent out a place, the other was someone whose listing was copied and reused. Both relied on people placing faith in strangers on Craigslist.
