Are they going to protect us from the gangs of elderly power walkers who cruise the malls on winter mornings? They scare me. I refuse to shop until they are brought to justice.

"122 security cameras, 33 blue-light call boxes that can be activated by consumers, and a Fairfax County Police substation located within the mall"

LOL. That shit just screams ghetto.

You want people to shop at a place so utterly crappy and overrun by criminals that you have to install rape call boxes and have to build a police substation in it?

Holy shit, that doesn't scream upscale. That screams "Detroit."

Those power walkers are a feisty bunch. I used to manage a store in Springfield Mall and God forbid you get in their way while you're trying to open your store.

" 10-foot-long “fire and ice” fireplace — in which fire shoots out from between clear glass stones — adorns the new food court. The court also has windows that can be opened in good weather to be able to offer diners an al fresco experience."

Wonder how they will keep the seagulls out?

"Anchor stores Macy’s, Target and J.C. Penny will be joined by new junior anchors Nordstrom Rack and Dick’s Sporting Goods"

Dicks is considered a junior anchor. That should give u some idea of the quality vendors they have rounded up.

"Suite Blanco, a Spanish clothing retailer, will also be opening its first DC-area store within the new town center."

Gee, wonder why?

They will implement a "paper bag" test. You cannot shop here if you are darker than this paper bag.

The black/brown savages can be controlled if the owners pony up the bucks for security, and they will.

They spent a lot of money on the place, so they'll do what it takes to control the savages for a few years. As it ages, they will spend less and less on security, and eventually the savages will rule the place once again.

Renovations aside, you wonder who approved a press release with lines like "new owners guarantee ‘comfortable, safe secure shopping experience’" and "brave new world". The former does nothing be reinforce the long-held belief that Springfield Mall was a dangerous place and the latter is just too weird to consider.

How, exactly, do they plan on keeping the environment safe? Call boxes are only really useful after the fact. Will there be a curfew for youths? Attempts to keep groups of more than 3-4 from congregating? Restrictions on unaccompanied minors?

I guess that area could use another shopping destination, but I think the investors are prepared to take a bath on this project.

Speaking of which...in the late 80's early 90's, when Macy's and the Food Court was put in, didn't they have an FCPD substation at the Mall? And then around 2000 or maybe 2002, FCPD stopped staffing it? And that's when the real problems started over there. The Mexican restaurant/nightclub that became a gang hangout...the woman abducted and shot...

Isn't this just going to happen again? The FCPD will staff the substation for a few years and then leave again?

Sub-contract security to the Ferguson, Mo. PD. That should settle things.

Just make it a "private club" for whites only and avoid most of the problems.

Well, after NAACP/AG Holder gets done with them none of them will have jobs, so employement at the Mall may be an option.

Dangerous mall? the only reason any crime happens near or in a mall is if it's empty, low security, and little risk of being caught. MEN on here are saying it's dangerous but when I worked in the mall when I was in school a few years ago I wouldn't leave the mall til after 9 and never felt scared. Why? because i had common sense and didn't put myself in dark scary places. At only 5'4" and skinny I never felt a drop of fear in the mall. Ballston had several shootouts before it was updated and I was followed out to the parking lot by 3 men once in Pentagon Mall, I was also followed around by a weird man in Tysons but I stayed in lighted areas always. The callboxes are excessive but obviously new management wants to assure the public that their mall is safe even if other malls aren't since they are investing millions duh.
