Is it common for NOVA teachers to cancel class for no real reason?

If the teacher is black, most likely cancelled in order to watch Michael Brown funeral on CNN.

You don't know it was for no real reason. It was for a reason the teacher chose not to share with you.

It varies, but some teachers do cancel class with some frequency. Never heard of canceling the first day, however. ALWAYS check your NVCC email before you leave for class. Some teachers give almost no notice.

My classes at U Maryland were almost never cancelled. Nova "professors" cancel them a lot. My kid spent a year there, so I know first hand.

Your kid told you classes were cancelled. See the difference?

More than likely your professor teaches at another college or has a full time job. NVCC professors don't make alot of $$$ so them teaching your class is a part time fuck off job that they really dont care about as long as you keep paying your tuition.

^ That's unfair. In my experience, most of the teachers at NVCC do care. They are certainly not teaching for the money. Some do have other jobs, but that allows them to bring real world experience to their instruction. I'll take them any time over the TAs that Mason uses for half of their courses.

No. Complain to the department head if any more classes are cancelled. NVCC is all low-paid adjuncts who have ten jobs and no health insurance and no sick time, so you get what you pay for. I'd let one class slide, but not more. You didn't pay much, but you did pay, and you deserve to get the agreed upon class time.

I am aware that I can't switch classes this semester. What can I do?

Why was "Blackboard" capitalized?

Blackboard is a website where you sign-in to submit assignments. They used to have some program which could compare your work versus work already submitted around the country.

Have you ever missed a class due to illness or personal emergency? Teachers are people, too :)

Blackboard has its own plagiarism software, and some instructors use Turnitin. Some students use Cyrillic letters in plagiarized essays to throw off the software; it usually works.

I didn't have any classes that were canceled when I took classes over there. I did however have one teacher totally blow off the first class of the semester. By the time the next class came around, add/drop deadline had passed. Teacher fully admitted that he forgot he had a class and gave some half-assed apology.
