Omaha Steaks

Any thoughts on this mail order place in terms of steaks and meat? I happened across their store in Fairfax, and wanted to go inside, but had too many items on the "to do list" to cross off.

I certainly get enough junk mail from them, but the meat does look good.

I've gotten Omaha gift packs from family members thru the mail a few times. The steaks are good, but I don't see what the big deal is. I'd certainly never ever pay for them on my own, and I'm not the type to be frugal when it comes to good steaks either. The stuff in their catalog is exhorbitantly priced. You can get equal quality at Balducci's or Whole Foods- even the butcher counter at the McLean Giant has steaks in the same ballpark quality-wise: for a whole lot less.

Maybe you get a better deal at their store, I've never been in one.

I agree. The steaks are not spectacular given what they charge. Also, something about meat being FedEx'ed to my home doesn't appeal to me.

LOL, I always liked playing with the dry ice it comes packed in.

Seriously, I just glanced at their website... you can order four 18 oz. porterhouses for $135!! That is absurd.

Well, the deal I got was four steaks, 10 burgers, 4 chicken breats, 8 dogs, 2 stuffed fish fillets, 4 pork chops, and 4 potatoes for $49.00

Much better than rack rate....

That is a good deal. Where'd you find it?

It's worth the 50 bucks...and the overnight delivery should be fine, its all frozen anyway.

I've received a gift from the parents from Stockyards - two big boxes of New York Strips. They came via UPS and came in a -sealed- styrofoam container that came with a lot of dry ice.

The steaks were still frozen, rock solid. So, I know that mail shipment is indeed doable.

They have these teaser rates from time to time, but I think that their products are horribly overpriced and the quality is decent, not top shelf. Plus, you really risk destroying the product if your freezer can't keep it properly frozen. The best case would be to use the steaks within a few days of receiving them.

Better yet, get a dry aged steak for about the same price at Wegman's or Whole Foods. The meat from Omaha Steaks is usually wet aged which is not bad, but once you have a dry aged ribeye you will never want to go back to "regular" beef again.

A slightly better deal, IMHO, are the Kansas City Steak Company products sold on QVC (leave me alone - they are a client). The shipping costs can be pretty high, but the steakburgers in particular are pretty good and the beef wellington is not bad either. I would, however, stay away from the filet mignon since they are very overpriced.

I agree on the dry aging meats. The wifey and I eat Downtown enough to like them. Flemings in Tysons does well too. Mortons is OK, but not as good as Flemings IMHO.

Here's the big question - can you use the special codes and discounts in the "brick and mortar" store?

I have stepped into the shop in Fairfax and the person there gave me a pretty hard sell to buying bulk stuff - similar to the "deal" mentioned in an earlier post. I just wanted to check the place out and it was all I could do to get out of there--very pushy sales people.

I don't know what the big deal is, but I have a neighbor from Nebraska and she swears by them....

I'd go to Wegmans or Whole Foods......

If you are open to a bit of food experimentation you can make your own dry aged beef at home. It takes a couple of weeks with a good bit of care, but the results are not bad and you will pay less than half what a good butcher charges. There are a couple of websites with good, simple instructions and when we did this for New Year's Eve everyone was pleased with the result.

Wegmans and Whole Foods are good, but they're expensive as shit...and the butchers will try to fuck you with a bad piece of meat if you don't pay attention and point to the one you want. One filet at either place is like $30. I bought a $12 filet at Giant the other day that was great. Med Rare is the way to go...

I order from Omaha once every three months, and I must say I always end up with a fabulous deal. The meats are delicious, but I will definitely stay away from the stuffed and au gratin potatoes. They are frozen, and taste nasty after baking them. I received quite a few rebates and percentages off, and I am truly a satisfied client.

I got a very nice Omaha Steak gift pack from a friend last X'mas.
I only had the 4 lobster tails inside and they wre good... but
not as good as fresh ones, obviously... there were also beef steaks
and ham in the gift pack... Too bad I don't eat pork or beef....
so I re-gifted it to my neighbor, who told me the steaks were excellent!

I have a friend in the midwest who has a large family gathering at his house the week before Christmas and I always send him a box of Omaha steaks as a gift. He raves about how nice it is to find them on the porch and only have to deal with side dishes. Burgers - so so. Hot dogs - Nathans are better. Baked stuffed potatoes - not so good. My friend and I agreed years ago that food as a gift is quite welcome because the last thing we need is something else to hang on the wall or otherwise collect dust.

Buy the beef tenderloin from Costco and cut it into steaks. Terrific. I also buy beef tenderloin from Giant and it is pretty much just as good. I bought Omaha Steaks before but this is very comparable if not better. Not worth the money.
