$10.75 for my old washing machine @ Davis Recycling...
Posted by: ...in the 22039 ()
Date: March 01, 2012 01:31PM

A few weeks ago, someone asked what to do with old scrap metal - I suggested going to Davis Recycling in Lorton, VA however, I did not have any personal results to speak of... until now...

I took our broken, old washer to Davis and in under 5 minutes, I had $10.75 in my pocket. Whoo hoo...

You pull through the gate, they put your truck on the scales, point you to the location to offload the item, then on the exit scales for a balance.

I weighed 6,180 going in, 6,030 going out... Your results may vary...

I hope this helps!

Davis is right off US1, just past Gunston Road heading S.

I put my dryer on craigslist it took me 30 seconds in 10 minutes I had 20 replies they came in my house took it and hauled it away for free. I would much rather have someone else take the dryer than load it in my car drive somewhere for $10 when gas is $4 a gallon. You got $10 bucks but you had to work for it. I got $0 but I didn't have to lift anything, move anything or drive anywhere. But nice try to get your company business. Maybe you can offer to pick stuff up for free than I might be interested.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I have no ownership or interest in Davis Recycling. They paid me and my only regret, not having more scrap/junk to sell them...

You said Craigslist worked for you, good for you... What was I supposed to do? Post a CL ad for a washing machine which didn't work? And I was supposed to hope someone came to my home for junk, case my joint, and then take my garbage? No thanks, I got paid enough to cover my lunch, and it cost me a total of 25 minutes.

Lifting 150 lbs in the back of a pickup isn't a big deal for me, maybe for you it is work. Whatever...

Just trying to offer a productive thread vs. most the stuff I read here... For more info on Davis, check out:

Good job.You didn't have to pay Fairfax County $25 or $50 to haul it away.

Given how much metal is being stolen (power lines, utility hole covers, etc), if you just put it outside, it will be gone within 24 hours.

Actually unlike the typical NOVA resident I make my kids cut the grass. They have chores. There are tons of people that make a living fixing broken appliances. The man who picked it up was whiter than me. I didn't ask what he was going to do I didn't care. And yes lifting a 150 pound appliance is hard for me as it is for most women. Maybe I should have waited for my husband currently overseas protecting our country to put it in the back of our truck. Great idea.

The lesson learned here is, fill up the your old appliances with bricks and sand.

On a more serious note, $10.75 for 150lbs is a whopping 7 cents/pound. At that rate, we could offload the OP's mother and probably cash in on about $30 or so...

You know, what started as my attempt to help residents of this county put a little extra in their pockets, has turned into a slam-fest. Do you feel like you have "powned" me, or something? Whatever, up late on a school night, junior?

Anyways, I am sure that Davis knows a washing machine weighs ~150 lbs and if you show up with one weighing 200 lbs, they'll inspect.

In the meantime, the real lesson I learned from taking the washing machine, is I should have loaded ALL scrap metal in my truck and taken at once.

A good example of this kind of information, was when I told a friend of mine about Davis, he told me he has a 75 lb reel of scrap copper wire. Solid copper!

He plans to go to Davis and cash that scrap into $$$$$$$$

Nope, no school for me. Just another day sitting at the office (Government), relaxing, while earning a fat salary on your tax dollars; While you run around trying to sell scrap metal to make ends meet.

Cheers!

You might want to research my zip, 22039... I have my days and nights free, as I took an early retirement by the time I was 35... Keep working... I'm not...

So scrapping is now part of the local economy? Great.

"Scrapping", has always been a part of the economy... Think about the landfills and transfer stations - they used to be free...

So thinking about this, I would have had to pay the county a disposal fee, or pay my local trash collector a fee to take my washer away.

Instead of paying $25-$50, as one alluded in this thread, I actually got paid for my trash. Nice. I netted some coin for a little effort and when combined with my errands that day, it really cost nothing for my time...

So, tonight, I think I'll take that money, plus some of my Craigslist earnings from other junk I've flipped, and take my family out to dinner.

Cheers!

I live in So. Cal. and recycling is everywhere and since we are right on the border
of Mexico. Most of these fucking illegals are diving in my dumbster to make a living or stealing stuff. Fuck these illegals and fuck the president for illegal reform. Thank you. Oh! And fuck Jerry Brown for giving them all drivers licenses

Exactly right. Liberals are terrible at math. If they were gambling and won $20 after losing $200, they would still think they won something.

In the past few mos., I have continued to save metal vs. throw away. Add a few items which I would have tossed, or should have, and it started to add-up.

I have netted over $800.00 in scrapping, all cash. And for stuff which I would have thrown away, anyways.

You can bet the trash service has a sorter, pulling all metal from the heap. FWIW< Aluminum, brass, and copper, all pay more than steel. And you have to show a photo ID to get paid, and cannot scrap utility hardware/equip., etc.

Again, just trying to help.

I knew this post was from some smart mouthed NOVA woman. The OP was posting about a good idea he had, and you had to chime in about how much smarter/better you are. Go back to your yoga class, honey, and realize there are still self sufficient people who can and do things on their own.
