Anyone else here putting in their time and can't wait to leave this area?
Posted by: Biding my Time ()

I am, that's for sure. I hate this area for so many reasons. Anyway, as soon as I put my time in, qualify for that pension, sell my overpriced shitbox Fairfax Station colonial, I'm out of here. Probably headed for the shores of North or South Carolina.

Just curious. Those of you here with the same plan to Get Out of Dodge when able, where are you planning on retiring to?

Yes, been thinking about the Caribbean. There's issues there too, but retirement money will help smooth things over.

I'd be quite surprised if everyone didn't have a desire to get out of this area if they could. Seriously, the only reason to live here is because the coin is good and job opportunities are available.

I often see older types who I know are retired, and I ask myself what is keeping them here. Even military retirees. Amazing.

Moving to North Carolina as soon as I retire. Already have a lot about a mile from the Atlantic that I'll start building on a couple of years before I go. This shithole of a county will get none of my pension money. ZERO. Neither will this shithole of a state. Used to think about retiring in VA Beach of the VA Eastern Shore but this state is turning into South Maryland. Screw that.

So GOP person who hates liberals, is the one on the dole of my tax money. I am a liberal, I pay taxes and don't get a pension. You are a douchebag GOP nut job, hate the government, but are willing to suckle at its teet.

How about, you solve this paradox by making a v with your hands, compress your thumbs on your trachea, and kill yourself in the most violent way known to man. The sooner we extricate you people from the US the better.

The hilarious thing about the (R)etards is they want to move to socialist violent, despot havens because, you know, America is all liberal and shit. Its more like, you know, they dont want to have a commander and chief who's black.

Enjoy moving to Juarez, I'm sure its great!

Normal civilized white folks need to get out within the next 10 years. By then, this will be a full blown third world area.
The trash, the filth, the rude behavior, the violence(mostly the niggers, of course) is getting worse each year.

We began our search for a suitable retirement haven about ten years ago. New England, the Carolinas, Florida, California, the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii. Not to mention various Caribbean and Mediterranean locales. And when all was said and done, we couldn't find a place we liked better than here. The quality of life here is very good. The amenities are unsurpassed. We have knowledge and roots and networks here. Since we can afford to stay, there is no point to leaving. Hope you all fare as well as we have. We are having a grand old time.

virginia is a beautiful state. I just would not retire in northern va. you're fooling yourself, or have became numb if you believe the quality of life is very good in northern va.
Then again, you sound happy living here. That's what counts.

This area was once the best place to live on the east coast 25 years ago...Everything has changed and not for the better. I will always have good memories of this place, "25 years ago."
Now I can't wait to move. only a few months to go.
I still miss how this area once was. Now it just fucking blows.

Add it up. One of the best educated areas of the country. Top health care facilities. A grand collage of first class shopping and dining. The Kennedy Center alone beats what 99.9% of the country has to offer in terms of the arts. Museums and galleries up the wazoo. A full array of sports and outdoor activities, including high-end systems of parks and rec centers. It's a morning's drive to the beach, to the mountains, and to four other major metropolitan areas. A four-seasons climate that doesn't crush you with any of them. Low taxes. Low auto insurance rates. Low incidence of natural disasters. You give up a lot when you move out of Fairfax.

Of course, there's the traffic, but once you retire, you don't drive in rush hour anymore. And there's the "cost of living'. It's actually moderate for the environs of a major US city, but if you can't afford to live here in retirement, then off you must go. But if people think they are going to find more for less somewhere, they are quite mistaken. They will find less for less, and they will have to live with that.

Very doubtful. Been here too long and I don't miss it when I leave now for our other place on a fairly regular basis. Only reason that I've stayed as long as I have was for other people. Really couldn't care less whether it misses me.

Yep. It was a nice medium-sized area with many unique benefits that you didn't find otherwise. Now it's kind of neither here nor there.

Good idea. Poor location choice. Tens of thousands of government workers from Maryland, DC, and Virginia have the same plan as you. Only they are already there. Visit your homesite with open eyes and see how it has already changed. Do you really want to retire to live with all you thought you left behind?

A lot of people will tell you they don't want to leave the area because their kids are still here. That's the biggest excuse ever for sticking around, because they probably don't see their kids except at Christmas or on a Birthday.
Retirees, if you really want to see more of your kids and grandkids when you retire, MOVE TO SOMEWHERE WHERE THEY WANT TO COME VISIT, like to the beach or an hour outside Disney World.

They want to be near their kids because most eventually lose their mobility. The husband is usually the first to go. Without the kids, the wife is stuck with spending much of her retirement carrying the burden of caring for a spouse that's too ill to look after himself. So the surviving wife gets a few years, perhaps 10 years, before she too has to be taken care of.

And you think the one or two kids they had will be taking care of them? And many had no kids (especially in the boomer generation). The kids are too busy trying to look after their own kids and trying to make money. The last thing the parents want is to be a burden to their kids. There is a whole industry surrounding the care of elders and it exists practically everywhere in America (and often much cheaper in those other parts of America). Just saying. Also many people do not become infirm until their 80's (or even 90's) and they can spend 15 or 20 years somewhere else before returning to the nearby assisted living in Fairfax (if that is in fact what they want to do). Having been through this, I can tell you that most retired people just want to have their independence (after many years of not having it) and don't want to have to rely on their children. So go after your dream after you retire in your 60's and enjoy life while you can!!! If you live your life worrying about becoming ill, you're not living your life. I say wheeeeeeee!!!!!

Nope, I'll stay until I've sucked all I can out of this craphole. Then I'll take my nice govie pension and retire someplace else that has a more reasonable tax rate and doesn't cater to illegal immigrants and homos. Meanwhile, you'll be paying by pension AND getting taxed out of your ass paying for the illegals. Thanks chump. LOL

I see quite a few live-at-home independent elderly in my neighborhood since our cluster is one of the original clusters in Reston. Some are living at home but have their kids check in on them. A few are living with their relatives. Dementia, alzheimer's, or parkinson's seems to be the prevalent reason. The decline can be quite prolonged.

Having visited a parent in the nursing home, the vast majority of residents seem to be in severe mental decline and became institutionalized because they couldn't be cared for at home any longer. Home health care is usually carried out by a relative being assisted by a contract nursing aide.
