Add it up. One of the best educated areas of the country. Top health care facilities. A grand collage of first class shopping and dining. The Kennedy Center alone beats what 99.9% of the country has to offer in terms of the arts. Museums and galleries up the wazoo. A full array of sports and outdoor activities, including high-end systems of parks and rec centers. It's a morning's drive to the beach, to the mountains, and to four other major metropolitan areas. A four-seasons climate that doesn't crush you with any of them. Low taxes. Low auto insurance rates. Low incidence of natural disasters. You give up a lot when you move out of Fairfax.
Of course, there's the traffic, but once you retire, you don't drive in rush hour anymore. And there's the "cost of living'. It's actually moderate for the environs of a major US city, but if you can't afford to live here in retirement, then off you must go. But if people think they are going to find more for less somewhere, they are quite mistaken. They will find less for less, and they will have to live with that.
