In her 13 years in Fairfax County schools, Catherine Overberg never had a sore throat or a fever. At McLean High School this year, she skipped “senior skip day.”

Sure it will; she's learned to show up at her "job" everyday. I bet she gets good grades, too.
That's the work ethic that made this a great nation, and that we don't see as much of anymore.

Ironically I do the same at my job, but I'll be the first to be layed off because I concentrate more on my work and less on showing up for my boss's happy hours.

Miss Overberg's gifts of a new set of golf clubs prior to my retirement a few years ago did not go unnoticed. This is precisely the kind of bribery....errrr, I mean "dedication" I have come to expect from FCPS students. And isn't it ironic that Miss Overberg is NOT in fact a brown, savage, illegal mud person?

See...now this is exactly what's wrong with the American workplace.

When I interviewed for my job 8 years ago, I told everybody I interviewed with..."I don't socialize with the people I work with. I also don't deal with personal business on the company's time or expense. Every minute I'm on the clock, everything I think and do relates directly to the job I'm paid to do. This also means I'm unavailable from 6PM - 7AM Mon-Fri and I don't work weekends. If you ask me to come in on a Saturday, Sunday or a holiday...don't look for me on Monday. I won't be back. If I can close a piece of business with a client during the company's picnics, holiday parties or other "team building events"...I'll be there. If there's no pending business...I will be at home resting for the next workday. I will always be the most productive employee every day, every week, every month and every year as measured by YOUR metrics. If I don't exceed everyone else...fire me whenever you like."

So, here we are 8 years later...and I've always been the top performer. Nobody likes me in the office...except my boss. He breaks EVERYONE'S balls asking why they can't do what I do given the same time and tools to work with. Everyone else can go fuck themselves. If I don't take care of me...who will? What...my co-workers? Nobody would give two shits about taking care of me...and they shouldn't. Because I don't care what the fuck they do as long as it doesn't interfere with my job.

You sound like a real asshole to be around.

I have seen the extremes. We'll have students miss a week of school for a family vacation. And the opposite is true as well. Students will come to school when they should be recovering from a cold or the flu. They are sneezing, coughing and look miserable. And they won't go to the nurse because they know if they have a fever they'll be sent home. So then the students around them, and the teachers, get sick.

This girl obviously takes her responsibility of being a student seriously. And hopefully she was also responsible in keeping any sickness to herself. It'd be nice if every student and parent could adopt a reasonable approach to attendance.

Just to be clear, "perfect attendance" can be achieved by gaming the system. I know several people that take their kids to school first thing so that they are checked in and then pull the kids out at 9AM to go to a doctor's appointment or something else.

Even though the student was only there for 1HR, they're considered "in attendance".

if she goes to FCPS, then the real question is once she becomes a whore will she be able to keep up this attendance record?

One of the things it took me too long to learn was that making my boss happy was part of my job.
