I grew up here and I don't remember this many of the blacks in Fairfax when I was growing up. I have this distinct memory as a kid of going to DC for the Auto Show and remembering thinking to myself, oh, so this is what a black person looks like. This was around circa 1990. So between 1990 and 2010, the blacks came flooding into Fairfax. Not a racist post, just wondering about the migration pattern of the blacks. When did it start and why??? Thank you.

The county was 8% black as of the 1990 census, and 9% black as of 2010. Meanwhile, Hispanic numbers went from 6% to 16%, but it was the change in blacks that you noticed, and you are not a racist? You realise there's something more to that 8 to 9% number than pure percentages. You must also account for dispersion and concentration. Say the 8% in 1990 were all in the DC correctional facility in Lorton. Today that 9% is dispersed throughout the County. Obviously that's more noticeable today than in 1990. I'm telling you in 1990, you didn't even see black people around here. I'm giving you just an extreme example, but there are definitely more blacks in the county today than 1990 and it's way more than 1%.

They started coming in the early 1700s and have been here ever since. My JHS was around 10% black as was my HS. This was the early 1970s. In the early 1990s when my kids started school their elementary school classes were around 10% black.

There has been an outflux from DC and MD, but I think it's been to PW Co much more than Fairfax.

While I'm sure that at one time the number of negroes on the inside at Lorton outnumbered the number of negroes living outside in the county; they would not have been included in that eight percent.

In the 90's it was very rare to have any coontacts. Only once or twice a year you would see a feral she-boom or gorilla out and about in the vienna/oakton/chantilly area. Typically a sighting would occur around 5 am ( when Fairfax releases the prisoners) and one could spot a feral walking aimlessly down 123 with a orange trash bag. Back then it was always best to ring the local police so a scout car could keep a watchful eye on on any boo sighting to ensure the public's safety.
