6/25 9:20 am Dismissal--Last Day of School

could someone please explain to me why they couldn't just have a couple of full days and be done with it? why these 2 or 3 hour days? makes absolutely no sense.

It is so the teachers can hit the happy hour at Kilroy's sooner.

It has to do with snow days. Fairfax took too many of them and the state said they had to make them up. Result is that the County HAS to have school on those days even if it is pointless because most students will be gone. My guess is the hours were based on the minimum time needed to meet state requirements and the ability to turn busses around.

SNOW DAYS you retard.

How are the students supposed to take the school seriously when the administrators and teachers clearly don't take it seriously? Is checking all the boxes really an education?

VA states you have to attend X amount of days for school each year.

To constitue a "school day" I think you have have at least 2 hours in school, so like someone stated, this is all about color inside the lines and check boxes to pacify the State Of VA requirements. There may even be something in the teachers union that states they need to work X amount of days?

What a total waste of resources and money for EVERYONE involved. Think about the amount of money FCPS could save if they shut down a week earlier and skipped the 2 hour school days.

I have been kidding that out kids will need to go to school until the 4th Of July one year and this may be the year that we get closest to that date?

Both my kids have scheduled trips that are not changing, so they are finished on the 20th regardless of what FFX chooses to do.

It makes total sense in a top-down, big government world that the Democrats are creating for us.

Those 2-hour days all have to do with funding. They have nothing to do with teaching.

And, if as a parent you don't send your kids to school for those 2-3 hours, the government will put the parents in jail.

Liberal Democrats suck.

Maybe Fairfax County would not have to consider a 4% meals tax if its school system wastes money like this, paying bus drivers, teachers, administrators, and staff for two weeks of admittedly nothing. This is government at work and a good example of why, though it is obviously needed, it should be as small as possible.

Its about exams. Not a good idea to have 5 exams in one day. So they space them out over the week.

That is most probably it. They have to have a certain number of days. If you go for a minimum number of hours, it counts as a full day. If they change to counting up hours of instruction it would be calculated differently.

This is what happens when bureaucratic imperatives, not the original purpose, drive policy. The schools were created to educate students. Now most policy decisions and operational decisions serve bureaucratic needs and required box checking, not teaching.

This is finals week for the high school. They take their exams in the morning and then go home. If Garza hadn't called a billion snow days for dumb shit, this week of half days would have been last week.

Students who aren't taking exams are still working. Grades are not due until Monday so I'm still having my kids complete assignments and projects. I don't know many teachers in my building who AREN'T still teaching.

A friend with a student at a western Fairfax high school said her child's classes have been watching movies and otherwise doing nothing for weeks. Exams are done. Teachers have requested the students not to come to class. Schools just need to be open to meet state requirements. What happens in the open building is immaterial. Money for nothing.

Don't drag the teachers into this - they think it's stupid, too.

The reason for the half-days is so high-school students will not have to take more than two exams per day, the poor dears.

Its all about snow days. Geeezzzz the original FCPS hard calendar, not the online one which has been modified, had the last day of the 2103-2014 school year as June 20th, which as I writh this is actually tomorrow. My kids are finished with all their exams on the 20th and one is actually going on a 6 week exchnge program that was scheduled to leave on the 22nd from the before the Winter actually hit. So school is over for my kids on the 20th as the other one just graduated.

I don't see any suicides on that schedule. Something's missing.

Idiots, yes the snow days pushed the calendar back but the half days are supposed to be for exams. Don't get me wrong, I do think the added days are a joke as most classes are no longer learning anything new (except for maybe AP/IB kids)
