Fairfax City, Region to Replace Emergency Alert Systems

Fairfax City residents will have to sign up for alerts, even if they previously signed up.

As the region heads into the dangerous hurricane and summer storm season, Fairfax City announced it will be replacing its eMAS system, which has sent residents electronic alerts about emergencies, city services and more since 2002.

The new system, called Fairfax City Alert, is part of a regional change in electronic messaging. The new service is powered by Everbridge.

The National Capital Region, a collection of jurisdictions in Virginia, Maryland and the District, chose Everbridge earlier this year to provide emergency and other communications across the region.

The new system will come online later this month – a specific date has not yet been announced.

Residents who sign up for Fairfax City Alerts will be able to choose from several alert categories across a variety of formats, including telephone and mobile devices. Residents will have to sign up for Fairfax City Alerts, even if they are already enrolled in eMAS.

Fairfax City Alerts service, including sign-up, will be available at www.fairfaxva.gov/about-us/fairfax-city-alert.

Glad to see the outreach to the community. For people who want to sign up for their local emergency system, go to www.usnear.org. Thousands of US counties have some kind of emergency notification service, so this address (www.usnear.org) is a great way to find one page that can get to them all.

Why not have the county simply update the alerts with the previous contact information?
