VOTER'S GUIDE: Va. voters go to polls in 3 US House districts
http://www.wusa9.com/story/news/politics/2014/06/09/virginia-voters-guide-june-10-primary/10240113/

WASHINGTON (WUSA9 )-- Tuesday, June 10 is primary day in Virginia. Virginians will be heading to the polls to select republican and democratic candidates for the U.S. Congress in districts 1, 7 and 8.

The polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

WUSA9 will have election results all night long on wusa9.com and live reports on the 11 p.m. news.

The race most locals are watching is for the 8th Congressional District. This seat is currently held by Rep. Jim Moran, who announced he is retiring from office. There are 7 democratic candidates vying for his seat.

U.S. CONGRESS-DISTRICT 1
Republican Primary

This district spreads from Prince William County to Hampton Roads. It includes portions of Fauquier, Prince William, Spotsylvania and Stafford Counties in our area. The winner will face Libertarian candidate Xavian Draper in the November General Election.

1. Robert J. Wittman: 55, he lives in Montross and is the republican incumbent. He has represented the 1st Congressional District since 2007. He is an environmental scientist. He is a member of the Armed Services Committee, and is chairman of its Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee. He also serves on the Subcommittee on Seapower and Expeditionary Forces.

2. Anthony Riedel: 29, he lives in Williamsburg and has never held public office. He is a spokesman for the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation.

U.S. CONGRESS-DISTRICT 7
Republican Primary

This congressional district stretches from Culpeper to the Richmond area. Barring an independent candidate, the winner of the GOP primary will more than likely be the next 7th district representative because Virginia's 7th Congressional District Democrats cancelled their convention and did not nominate anyone to run against the eventual GOP nominee.

1. Eric Cantor: he has held this seat since 2001. He is House Majority Leader. He previously served as House Minority Whip (2009-2011). He served in the Virginia House of Delegates (1992-2001).

2. David Brat: is an economics professor at Randolph Macon College in Ashland. He says his problem with Cantor is based largely on the majority leader's votes to raise the debt ceiling, his vote to end the government shutdown, and his voiced support for immigration reform.

U.S. CONGRESS-DISTRICT 8
Democratic Primary

This is the seat currently held by long time democrat, Jim Moran. Moran has held this office for 24 years. Moran announced he is retiring from office.

The 8th congressional district includes Alexandria, Falls Church, Arlington County and parts of Fairfax County.

The winner of this primary will face Republican Micah Edmond in the November general election.

1. Donald Beyer, Jr.: 63 years old and lives in Alexandria, he is a businessman owning Don Beyer Volvo. He is the former Lieutenant Governor of Virginia (1990-1998) serving 2 terms with Republican Governor George Allen. He also served as Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein (appointed by the Obama administration 2009-2013).

2. Lavern Chatman: 57 years old and living in Alexandria, she is the former Northern Virginia Urban League President. She retired in 2011.

3. Mark Levine: 48 years old and lives in Alexandria, he is a constitutional lawyer and radio talk show host. He is former chief legislative counsel to Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass.

4. Patrick Hope: 42 years old, he calls Arlington home. He is currently a Virginia State Delegate (2010-present). He is a healthcare attorney and lobbyist for the American College of Cardiology. He is also an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health.

5. Adam Ebbin: 50 years old and lives in Alexandria, he is a Virginia State Senator (2012-present). Previous to serving in the State Senate he was a Member of the Virginia House of Delegates (2004-2011).

6. William "Bill" Euille: 64 years old, is currently Alexandria's Mayor (2003-present). Previously he served on the Alexandria School Board (1974-1984) and the Alexandria City Council (1994-2003).

7. Derek Hyra: 40 years old and lives in Alexandria. He is an Associate Professor of Urban Affairs and Planning at Virginia Tech. His political experience includes working for the Alexandria Planning Commission (2013-present); and the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority (2009-2013).

8. Satish Korpe (withdrawn but name is still on ballot): the founding president of an engineering firm.

The first time I saw Mark Levine's sign I had to do a double take as I thought it said Mark Levin. I guess we could only have wished so.

The Ned Devine sign is much better. Usually means that I can get feed and drunk at a reasonable price.

Voters have their say today in 8th District
http://www.insidenova.com/news/arlington/voters-have-their-say-today-in-th-district/article_8137dc3e-f092-11e3-94ea-0019bb2963f4.html

Democratic voters in the 8th Congressional District head to the polls today, and given the political makeup of the district, the winner of the primary is likely to sail to election in November.

Seven candidates are vying for the nomination, with two others having dropped out of the race too late to have their names scrubbed from the ballot.

The punditocracy has anointed former state lieutenant governor Don Beyer as the front-runner, but several other candidates have windows of opportunity to eke out a victory:

• Del. Patrick Hope could conceivably run up the vote in his home base of Arlington to push him over the finish line.

• State Sen. Adam Ebbin could use his support within his Senate district (which includes a large swath of the 8th Congressional District) to score success.

• Alexandria Mayor William Euille could rally his base to victory.

The seat opened up when U.S. Rep. Jim Moran announced in January he would not seek re-election to the seat he has held since 1991. The district includes all of Arlington, Alexandria and the city of Falls Church, along with parts of Fairfax County.

Waiting in the wings is Republican nominee Micah Edmond. But recent voting patterns in the district have been heavily Democratic, making Edmond’s bid a long-shot at best.

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

If Micah Edmond loses it will be because voters in the 8th are too racist to vote for a black man.

IOr they are anti-Semitic (like Jim Moran) and will not support a Jewish man.

Mark Levine also is a co-founder of the Marriage Equality movement. In 2001, he negotiated with the Bush Administration to provide gay survivors access to the 911 Victims Compensation Fund. At first, they hesitated because their base would hate the idea. All agreed to go ahead with the provision that no one talk about it.

Mark (and everyone else) kept that secret until DOMA was overturned.

He's more than a talk-show host, he can get things done BECAUSE he has strong principles and is not afraid to debate the right wing on their turf.

I don't work for the campaign, just a concerned old man in the VA08.
