Fairfax schools consider full-day Mondays for elementary schools

Fairfax County school officials are considering a switch to full-day Mondays for elementary schools.

Eliminating Monday early dismissals would give students an additional 2.5 hours of instruction each week. The change would include protected teacher planning time, replacing the current block of planning time on Monday afternoons.

Superintendent Karen Garza brought the plan before the School Board on Wednesday, and said the change could occur as soon as this September.

Anybody know what Ryan McElweeny's tweeted about this? I'm not on the Twitter.

Of course they are... we have already have had to deal with a kid going to school for 4 hours on Mondays for the last 6 years. Why shouldn't other parents get the joy of trying to work a fulltime job and deal with fcps's stupid bell schedule?

When Fairfax took the two hours off the Moday school instruction time, they extended Tues., Weds, Thurs. & Friday by 30 minutes.

If FCPS decides to go back to the five day schedule, will the kids be released thirty mins earlier to offset Mon?

Short answer: no.

The elementary school day is so tightly scheduled with mandated timed classes, there's no way to shorten the school day.

The average elementary school from bell to bell goes 29.5 hours. The average middle school in the county goes 34.5 hours. If they add the 2.5 hours back to Monday, the elementary schools are still only at 32 hours. The myth that they added the hours onto the other days is false - always has been.

What, again considering this change? This must be the tenth time in the last twenty years. Talk, talk, talk, nothing will change, two years down the road talk about it again. Waste everyone's time. And while we're at it, let's change the Redskins name, too.

It is not a daycare. I like the current schedule.

An extra 2.5 hours a day will equal about 7-12 extra school days a year. in average they will now have 13 extra make up days and not 3. a school day is about 6 hours long.

I was going to .keene Mill ES when they started early closing Monday. I was used to getting out of school by 3:00 each day. With shorter Monday's, I didn't get out until 3:30 Tues. thru. Fri.

I don't think its a myth!
