Man Jammed Cell Phones of Other Drivers, Faces Huge Fine

FCC staked out interstate and was able to track jamming signal. Authorities worry popularity of such devices is growing.

Federal authorities say a Florida man tired of people talking on their cell phones when driving took matters into his own hands: He jammed their phones.

Jason R. Humphreys faces $48,000 in fines for using a jammer in his SUV, MYFOXNY.com reported. According to the Federal Communications Commission Humphreys used the jammer for about two years during his morning drive to work.

The FCC was alerted by cell phone company Metro PCS in April 2013, theblaze.com reported. The company noticed cell tower sites experiencing interference.

Humphreys used the device on Interstate 4 between Seffner, Florida and Tampa.

A jamming device transmits a signal on the same frequency, but at a high enough power that the two signals collide, cancelling each other out, theblaze.com reported.

The FCC's enforcement division staked out I-4 and were able to pinpoint the jamming signal coming from Humphrey's vehicle, the Tampa Tribune reported.

One of the reasons such jammers are a no-no are safety concerns, the Tampa Tribune reported. People who might need to make a 911 call could be blocked, for example, or other communications used by law enforcement and emergency personnel could be impacted.

The newspaper reported that federal authorities worry the popularity of such devices could be on the rise.

Yeah, texting while pushing a grocery cart is such a problem.

It took two years for the FCC to get this guy. He always left it on and followed the same route every day. If you only turn it on when you need it and leave it off otherwise, basically looking like random times and places, you'll never get caught.

Kind of ruins the purpose of it though. In engineer talk, a bridge that isn't strong enough to support the weight of a person walking across isn't a very good bridge.

Unless the bridge wasn't designed to carry people across.

Okay, I'll dumb it down for you. If the purpose of the jammer is to disrupt nearby cell phone users (which is a given in the story), turning the jammer off in order to escape detection defeats the purpose of having purchased it to begin with. Both ends of the see-saw cannot be in the air at the same time. Capiche?

You can get one from outside the country that will jam the phones on a bus. Like anything the better and smaller units cost more. But $500 will get a decent one.

I'm surprised more teachers don't buy these and hide them under their desks. Would probably help cut down on students playing w/ cell phones in class.

You never heard of these devices before you read this thread, now you are some techie expert who's tested and rated all the available models? You don't have a bright future in this world, sonny.

You do make a point, but you were skewered previously...

The point is not to use the device in a traceable pattern. This can be accomplished in more ways then simply turning it off...

By varying your routes and/or varying your travel times you can elude the authorities to infinity. I don't know that area of FL but hell, here in NOVA I have 6 routes that I can use to commute back and forth.

You could design a simple app to randomize your route option each day (or just literally pull one out of a hat on your way out the door) and then add a factor of +/- 10 minutes on your departure time and they aren't going to catch you.

You're as dumb as a stick. The only way to avoid detection is never to use a jammer at all. You use it, you lose it. Along with about $48,000, it seems.

Nope. Fail. If your route is random, assets cannot be in place in advance to catch you in the act. Seriously...why you so mad, bro?

Tell you what...

Why don't you go back to your room...errrr, I mean your parents' basement? Don't worry, Mommy will be down soon to smother your genitals with marshmallow fluff while Daddy plays hide the nine iron in your ass and watches you lick your shit off the end of it. Then you call all watch "DuckTales" together...

They're actually pretty accessible if you want to take five minutes searching online.

Some on this thread are praising the lawless cellular vigilante who was so thoughtlessly jamming cell phone service for others in his path. However, what they are not taking into account is the fact that many people use their cell phones in their cars perfectly legally by using Bluetooth speakers or headsets. Others might be placing 911 calls, which also are perfectly legal while driving, with or without a headset.

The vigilante jerk was setting himself up for a lawsuit from someone who might have suffered serious harm, loss of life, or financial loss because he wanted to play Mr. Enforcer.

What a sad life he must have if that is how he gets his rocks off!

I hope they throw the book at him.

Correct. If a preponderance of all calls made from cars were for 911 this there would be nearly no calls made. Most are douchebags in the BMW 5 Series cruising way too fast and trying to talk up how important they are to their boss, their clients, the girl they want to bang but never will.

Maybe you'll have a cell phone one day. Then you'll realize how useful they can be. Kind of like chainsaws, you have to use them properly in consideration of potential safety issues. Do you think you will be able to handle that?

thinks that a moving "dead zone" going by his endangered life w/emergency 911 call at 60 mph would leave him stranded or something.
