If you are ARRESTED on a first-time DUI charge, police will keep your license for 7 days. If you are CONVICTED on a first-time DUI charge, your license will be suspended for one year. And there will be plenty of delays on the back end in getting the court to agree that you should have it back. You can petition for a RESTRICTED license in the meantime. That request may or may not be granted but usually is. The RESTRICTED license will allow you to drive to and from work. A limited number of other places may be included if your attorney can get them put in. All this presumes that your BAC was below .15%. If not, you are in for a whole extra world of hurt.
