"Stacey Kincaid made history when she won Fairfax County’s race for sheriff in November: All of her predecessors in the 271-year history of the office — 76 total — were men.

Kincaid said she hopes shattering that glass ceiling is just the start of changes she wants to bring to an office in which only one in five deputies is a woman and just 32 percent are nonwhite.

Kincaid said she wants to create opportunities for women and minorities in the department, which oversees the county jail, manages courthouse security and serves civil papers. She said it’s essential for the job.

“Fairfax County is so diverse,” Kincaid said. “It’s bigger than skin color. It’s the diversity of beliefs and everything else. Any law enforcement agency needs to try to understand that diversity to be effective.'..."

I think I understand, hire and promote based on filling quotas not the best suited for the job. Seems fair to me.

The new sheriff said she would seek to begin a program that would recruit volunteer mental health professionals to serve as case managers for convicts once they leave the jail. Kincaid said 60 percent of inmates suffer from mental health issues or have substance abuse problems and that better monitoring could reduce recidivism.

Good luck with that, case management is a 24/7 job. I don't know of anyone that would do that for free. Plus, since it is volunteer, the case manager can walk off the job anytime and leave the former convicts in the lurch.

If they are locked up, then the mental health issues don't need to be dealt with immediately. Start working on them about 6 months before their release. Even if they work on prescribing meds for the inmate, there's a good chance that he / she will get out, then eventually stop taking them.

The thought is there, and that is what's important. But, getting someone to fill the shoes and do the job for free is a big wish.

Eesh's been picked up so many times, he's got a cell with his name engraved on it.

If Sheriff Kincaid is so co Verne's about promoting fairness and equality then why did she immediately promote her boyfriend- Kevin Andariese- to Lt Col upon taking office? Who knew that pillow talk equated to fairness. Fairfax's very own Cathy Lanier, for sure. In fact, Kincaid stems from PG County. Maybe the two can get together and compare notes on their trailer trash life practices.

The new LT is quite qualified for the job. He also is a very dedicated family man and whoever you are it's very obvious your are so miserable in your life you can't stand to see people achieve goals and make life better for themselves and others around them. You really need a dose of reality and to move on from all the negativity and jealousy

For mental health it would be fine, though in this area good luck getting people to do it for free.

However from a substance abuse standpoint it couldnt be a bigger waste of time. Treatment for that only has a chance if they actually want to get clean and make changes. Court ordered treatment or as part of probation is basically everyone just going through the motions if the person doesnt want help

I couldnt care less about what that other guy said or her boyfriend if he can actually do the job. But its definitely our Sheriff who needs a dose of reality if she thinks quota hiring females is a great idea to guard inmates that are overwhelmingly male.

Fairfax is so diverse. It's bigger than skin color... so I will use skin color as the sole determining factor for making staff decisions.
