I got married in 1980. We bought our townhouse soon after. So, yes, I would say early 1980's.

So people paid 14% on their mortgage and were able to make ends meet, yet today people default on 5-6% interest rate mortgages? What the fuck happened to this country? Oh..sorry Petey, did not mean to interrupt. Please continue my good man.

Yes, we paid an unbelievable 14% back then. Those were the years of WIN (whip inflation now) and all that nonsense. Thank God we knew about refinancing, and as soon as rates dropped we did.
Interesting note: I was so poor then that I could not have the thermostat replaced in my 79 Olds Cutlass (what a piece of shit). Anyway, no heat and my wife is fucking pregnant with our second child and she tells me, "It's coming." This is during Reagan's second Inaugaration and the fucking Government is closed and the Inaugauration is cancelled because of the cold. And I'm having a fucking baby! Anyway, I throw the bitch I married into the Olds, throw in an old horse blanket to help keep her warm and we drive to Fairfax hospital to have that baby born. I'll never forget that.
