A fight involving a police officer led to a massive police response in the Dumfries area Monday afternoon, Prince William police said.
Police were called to the area of Panther Pride Drive and Harwood Oaks Court in south Woodbridge about 4:30 p.m. Monday to investigate reports of a suspicious person, Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok said in a news release.
A caller told police that a man had been seen walking around an apartment complex in that area for hours, police said. When a police officer arrived, he found the man, later identified as Sean Owington Johnson, sitting by the community pool, Perok said.
When a police officer approached him, Johnson walked away, jumping in front of oncoming cars and school buses as he went, police said. The police officer attempted to arrest Johnson, but he “actively resisted” arrest and began to fight with the officer, Perok said.
Police lost communication with the officer and a distress call was issued, resulting in “a large police response” in the area, Perok said.
Other officers arrived and were able to arrest Johnson. The first responding officer was treated at the scene for minor injuries, police said.
Johnson, 27, of Plumage Eagle Street in Woodbridge, was charged with assault and battery of a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, obstruction of justice and disorderly conduct. He was taken to an area hospital with non life-threatening injuries and is being held without bond pending a May 7 court date. No mugshot was available.
