There is no Northern Region anymore but under the old Northern Region there were 30 schools - 15 were D6 and 15 were D5. Under the new system there are 26 in 6A North and 24 in 5A North. The old Northern Region was all of Fairfax County, Arlington County, TC Williams and Stone Bridge. The new setup includes 20 "new" schools from outside these areas.

Apparently there is one less minority coach now in the northern region, South Lakes posted an opening for head varsity football coach. Anyone know what happened to Wooten?

Heard from a SL football parent that he notified the players that he was stepping down because football was taking too much of his time away from his family and he is definitely not taking another job somewhere else. He's a young guy with a young family and it's easy for parents, students and fans to forget that HS coaching is a low paying, high commitment and stress inducing activity.

There probably isn't another candidate lined up since this just happened but I ran into a FB parent I know recently who told me there are a ton of good athletes in the SL freshman class this year.

Like any good coach at SLHS he tired of working for Linda Jones. Quality candidates run away, which is Such a waste for the students there. She needs to move along and let someone who gives a shit do the hard work needed for those kids.

Spending time with his family was only part of the reason. Like the poster above stated, he was tired of dealing with the administration at SL. There's enough athletes in that building to make SL a contender but they have to find a guy who can do it without support from the administration. Athletics is just not important to SL.

No doubt about it. Everyone associated with the school knows that Linda is the one person holding back the athletics programs through her incompetence and apathy, nobody more so than Kim Retzer the principal. Linda could get away with her laziness when the school had 1,400 students and no expectations in any sport but that shit won't fly when there's 2,600 students.

Good luck with that clown. If you want an offense that is uncreative and scores less then 20 points a game ole Scotty boy is your man. Check VHSL reference, he is a career loser and as a HC and OC his offenses have only averaged over 20 ppg 2 in 12+ years. Oh yeah and by the way he will do nothing but scream, yell and belittle your kids. Scott Woodlief is a unqualified coach, good luck Edison HS

If Woodlief is indeed the hire at Edison, why has it not been officially announced? what are they waiting for? is he currently working with the kids after school?

Long time Robinson fan. Does this new young coach have a chance against the Concorde coaches. You would think Robinson would be able to get a coach with more experience.

Well the good news for Robinson is I believe there is only one really good coach in the district, and that is Haddock.

You can make the case for Westfield, and no doubt they run a good program, but I'm not impressed with the x's and o's and they have a gigantic talent pool to draw from.

How can you say the only good coach is Haddock? Having the best talent doesn't make you the best coach.

Also - every year the playoffs are filled with Concorde school. They are considered to have the best staffs in this area. Centreville, Westfield, Oakton, and Chantilly all are consistently among the top teams in this area. Westfield has two state titles, Oakton has a state title and 4 northern region championships since 2000. Chantilly has appeared in the state title game and in region title games. All those teams have the same staffs (give or take a few) during all those runs.

The past 3 northern region title games were played between Concorde teams. Coincidence?

It is more about the talent and less about the coaches at the HS level. Not saying the coaches are not important, because they are. But if Westfield had a QB this year, Centreville would not have run over them the way they did. That is just one example. Talent wins most of the time in HS.
