Virginia House panel again shoots down bill to protect cyclists from ‘dooring’

The move to give police the ability to assess fault, and cyclists the ability to file insurance claims, is rejected for second time.

It is interesting that the photo accompanying the article seems to show the cyclist running a red light. My experience is that the vast majority of cyclists ignore the traffic laws that will get a motorist a ticket. I gave up commuting to VA from MD through DC, because of cyclists that insisted on occupying a full lane on Wisconsin Ave. at well below the speed limit and no amount of honking would cause them to move to the right. Red lights, no turn on red, no left turn, pedestrians in crosswalk rules seem not to apply.

Which just goes to show you have no idea what the traffic laws are given cyclists can take the lane and that you don't understand the issue of dooring because that's precisely why they don't move over for you. Continue with the ignorant rants though if it makes you feel better and stop honking without reason...

The legislature has let us down again ... Maybe the governor can help with an executive order (or whatever passes for imperial edicts at the state-level).

Until all people respect and honor the sanctity of me and my bicycle-riding brethren, we bicyclists must have laws to protect us from the consequences of our actions, and allow us to do more safely (leastwise for us) what we're going to do anyway.

Until then:

I demand the right to ride on any street, ignoring all traffic laws and such that I can impede an entire lane of traffic if I want.

I demand the right to blaze alongside a file of parked cars, and not account for the possibility that sometimes cars leave parking spots ... and drivers leave the cars.

I demand the right to ride on any sidewalk, trail and path, and while doing so, to overtake pedestrians at whatever speed I choose to enjoy ... and with as little clearance as is fun for me.

Couple with the previous, I demand the right to teach pedestrians to honor the rules-of-the-road while they use sidewalks, trails, and paths. Pedestrians must stay on the right-verge of the pathway for their own safety, as I feel compelled to overtake them at whatever speed I am enjoying.

Bicyclists need a law sort of like the drivers (the Islamic persuasion) enjoy in the Middle East. Namely, bicyclists need a law to give them the right of way wherever they ride ... sort of like they already have in Arlington. (Google "Ita Lapina" ... in Arlington, a bicyclist can kill someone, and not even worry about their name being released to the public.)

One thing we don't need, is laws to reign in bicyclists. We are the salt of the earth. And we are single-handedly saving the environment. And besides. We're guys who look cute in spandex.

Besides, we bicyclists are in a hurry. We might not be going anywhere, but we need to get their QUICK!

I demand the right to sue your family for damaging the alignment of my BMW when I drive over your body when you fail to get out of the way of cars. Bikes belong on bike trails, not city streets.

So, in Virginia, if a driver opens the car door in the path of a cyclist who then crashes into it, the driver is legally blameless for the cyclist's injuries. I'm curious: Can the driver sue the cyclist for damage to the car's door?

The signal has already turned green in the background. The beige car on the right is in the intersection.

That's a different intersection, it doesn't mean that all them turn green at the same time.

This is good. Now let's work together to ban recumbent bikes and those little trailer strollers for toddlers.

Come on guys. Start opening your doors. First one to 10 cyclist wins. But to be fair at least 50% must be taken away by ambulance.

+1

I'm glad the law didn't pass. Fuck cyclists, they're a menace to public safety.

Are velomobiles allowed on the streets?

So if you make an improper lane change (i.e; don't see a car in your path) and cause a fender bender, you get fined. But if you don't see a cyclist and cause him serious bodily injury, you're off the hook. Got it.

Cyclists are constantly trying to get laws passed that make it easier for them to create havoc on the roads. Glad to see someone standing up these people. Let's get cyclists off the roads and make them safer for all.

Yeah, uh huh. And the cyclist just blew away every one of those cars off the line. The beige car is in the intersection? Kind of hard to tell in the picture but it appears the chain is on the big sprocket in front. I doubt he took off from a dead stop that way AND it looks like an uphill grade......hylarioos!!
