If you have not already done this, take the dog to the local humane society for a scan. There is a decent chance that the dog has a implanted chip that will identify the owner.

How does a human society gonna help a dog find it's way home?

No microchip, unfortunately. This dog is an amazingly sweet creature. It's obvious that the dog has a home and must be loved.

You should turn it into Animal control. Most likely the owner would search there and not this site. And how do you know no microchip?

Try posting in the pets section on craigslist. Also be a good idea to call the county animal control and tell them you found the dog in case the owners reported it lost there.

If you can't/don't want to keep the dog, try the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (alexandriaanimals dot org; tel 703-746-4774; shelter at 4101 Eisenhower Avenue). Although their name is 'Alexandria,' they work with pets and owners in Fairfax, too. The staff and volunteers are great, friendly, compassionate, and will make sure the dog gets placed in a good home if the original owner can't be found. Give them a call even if you don't want to put the dog in a shelter or foster home - they can give you good info/advice on your options. (If you post a 'found dog' ad on Craigslist, leave out some detail about the dog's appearance or where it was found - make people tell you that info in order to check that it's really their dog and not someone looking for a free dog to use for dog fighting bait, or something.)

The sweet girl was reunited with her owners. The first thing we did when we found her was run her to the local vet's office to scan for a chip. We would have kept her had her owner not been located. They were extremely grateful that we picked her up, as she had dug under the fence. Thanks for the advice, all.

Nice of you to rescue this dog. I wouldn't take a dog to the pound because the owner would get slammed with fines. Nice of you to save them money. They owe you.

If you loved it so much, you should have told the owners it died.

The owners did not provide a reward, but none was expected.
