disclosing info about murders

Just curious if it is true that when purchasing a house that the realtor must disclose if a murder was committed in the home? And if a home is said to be haunted is the realtor obligated to disclose this information as well? I had always heard that legally the selling agent must disclose this information.

Chuck.... Thank you for providing the extra information. Very interesting to read and see how many murders have occured in this area. Obviously the news hasn't reported all of them because I had no idea that there were this many. Shocking actually. So thank you.

Did you buy a house where someone had died in it or was killed?

Chuck, how are you so awesome? the list from 2005-present only showed up with two points for some reason. Please don't delete your comments, you're the whole reason I started lurking on this site years ago! my google queries always led to Chuck!

Better to start with asking if the current / former owner ever hired a local contractor.

So is a realtor required to reveal the history of the house or not? Is there a law on the books in VA that requires them to reveal if a murder took place?

A particularly interesting murder would make the house more valuable, especially if it was haunted. Haunted houses generally command a premium price.

Great map!

Shouldn't the 1993 CIA shootings be included?

Failure to disclose that a house was the site of a homicide or suicide is specifically excluded as a cause of action in § 55-524.A.2. http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+55-524

mmm. why? delay of court, prosecuting the victim, destructing the jury, .. a few fav tricks, delay (and threat by gov workers) being the most used.

telling an all day sucker "well there's no law in the books we'll have to write one" is a common trick and used heavily from 1800's till now. it was illegal to bullshit like that.

the issue at law likely wasn't about smell or rumor (maybe).

what if you bought a house and found out police had "permanent access" to the house based on the fact it was the scene of a past crime currently under investigation ? or maybe that there could be a future lien situation due to other laws ? AHA! it maight not be abut ghosts

"the rich need poor courts" -jh

good you should start from the beginning of legal history at least 2000 yrs ago, not the hinds end of "ms word changes" of 2013. the first written laws forward. not what politicians recent rantings and edits which legally are illegal to be in law books (but ok in regulation books)

now if you found a law that the legal people broke

"what are you doing to do about it" is what they are going to impose on you

do anything ? get arrested for doing it, is their proposition

One would think that the site of homicide, would be something that should be disclosed. For example, let’s say that someone who was famous (only locally) died in the house. Shouldn’t I, as the new homeowner, have the right to know this? Especially if people come to the house, wanting to see where said homicide occurred? Seems like to me, I would have a legal case for knowing as that incident has impacted my life.

Thank you Chuck, I think that the next time I look into buying a home, I will indeed add a section to the purchase contract, stipulating that they provide full disclosure on the history of the house despite what the code says. I have a friend that purchased property outside of Fairfax county, that went through something similar to the scenario I listed above. Now they have to deal with trespassers, goth groupies, and strangers coming to the home at odd hours of the day and night wanting to see it or take a tour. Very creepy if you ask me. Our friends were never told of the house’s history, even though they say they posed the question to both the realtor and the previous home owners.

Wow, back in the 50s some of my relatives had their house torn down because it was so badly haunted. They could no longer handle living there and couldn't sell it because it had gained a reputation. It's now a restaurant.
