Certain Amtrak trains already accept VRE passengers with a $3 step-up ticket. This successful program has reduced overcrowding on some VRE trains and increased Amtrak ridership and revenues. This program is the least expensive way for VRE to increase capacity.
Northbound Amtrak trains 80 (Carolinian) and 66, and southbound trains 67 and 79 should accept step-up tickets. These trains provide reverse flow service where there is no VRE service. This policy would allow people who live in Alexandria, Fairfax, Prince William and Stafford to commute to jobs south of their homes. This action would also encourage people in these places to visit the tourist sites in the Fredericksburg area.
