BLACKSBURG, Va., Sept. 27 (UPI) -- A Virginia Tech student died in a weekend fall from a third-floor apartment balcony in Blacksburg, authorities said.
The victim was identified as sophomore political science major David Gayle of Norfolk, the student-run campus newspaper Collegiate Times reported online Sunday.
Blacksburg police were investigating the student's death, which occurred Saturday night in an apartment building where a party took place on the same floor, the newspaper said. Gayle was not listed as a resident of the building.
Virginia Tech sophomore Michael Smith told Collegiate Times he was with a friend in the building, but not at the party, when they heard people running down the stairs.
"We heard someone say, 'He fell,'" Smith said.
Smith said he went out and found "a guy laying on the ground and people standing around him; some of them were crying."
Smith said he used his training as a life guard and CPR and AED instructor to check Gayle's condition and found a faint pulse and shallow breathing. A police officer arrived, followed by an emergency medical crew shortly after but by then "he had no pulse," Smith said.
Smith told the newspaper most of the people at the party had fled by the time police arrived.
"A couple people stayed with him, they knew him personally," Smith said, adding one witness told rescue squad members Gayle had been trying to get on the roof.

RIP David. It is always a tragedy when somebody goes that young, no matter what the circumstances. While most of us make it out of college alive, others aren't so lucky. Condolences to the friends and family.

This is so sad, what is going on with kids. Three teens died over the weekend. All three seemed like they came from good families. What is going on, it's very depressing to hear all of the stories. I feel like I am a good mom but I seem to be questioning myself today!

What good would 100 drunk kids standing in the way and girls crying around have done in this situation? A kid who knew cpr and first aid techniques stayed and helped - tons of other people would have been the way of not only this kid but of the police and emt's when they arrived.
A similar situation happened at my apartment years ago at tech except then a kid fell about 10 feet down from the ground into a dugout basement balcony while we were having a party. He broke his neck and thankfully survived but was life flighted and the people that did stay were screamed out by the police and emt's to get out of the way. People and fighting through the crowd caused them to lose precious seconds that could have made a big difference in a situation like this. I commend the students for being smart enough not to get in the way of help and I commend the student who knew how to help for stepping up and doing what he could.
A hokie lost or any young person's life cut short, is always a sad occasion and I hope the best for his family, including that they don't read any of this "college rivalry" nitpicking you're doing to one another in the name of their son.

1250 must be the old scoring system (1600 perfect). Here's a look SAT scores for the incoming class at Virginia Tech in 2009:

Yes, I meant 1250 on the old scoring system of adding just mathematics and critical reading. The average in the nation for each section is about 500, so Virginia Tech is above average.

I've heard of dumber stories from VT and other places, so this one is just another run of the mill, probably avoidable, accidents.

It really upsets me that our society has created people who will have such conversations on a wall that is designated for remembrance and respect. I hope the best for all of you and maybe one day you will see this world is much bigger than any of this ridiculous argument.
This is a tragic event and one that people can reflect on and hopefully realize what is really important in this life. I pray for the safety of the next generation and for genuine change.
