Vienna Metro Station Has the Most Crime Among Virginia Stations
http://oakton.patch.com/groups/police-and-fire/p/vienna-metro-station-has-the-most-crime-among-virginia-stations-oakton

Hold onto that cell phone. Or, better yet, don't use it — especially at the Vienna Metro station.

In a report released this week, Metro Transit Police ranked the most crime-ridden Metro stations in the system—the only station in Virginia on the top 10 list is Vienna.

More than half of the crimes committed on the Metro are thefts of cell phones and bicycles, according to that new report from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

"The National Capital Region is experiencing an increase in cell phone and device snatches and bike thefts that, in turn, is driving an increase in crime on Metro," according to the report. "59 percent of all Part I Crime in the Metro system involve the theft of a cell phone or bicycle."

The report also says, "In the first eight months of 2013, there were 1,432 Part I Crimes reported in the Metro system, an increase of 9.8 percent over 2012 for the same period of time."

Download the full report here.

This list shows the 10 Metro stations in the system (Virginia, DC and Maryland) with the most crime from January through August 2013 and how many crimes occurred (including thefts, robberies and assaults among other incidents):

•Vienna - 28
•West Hyattsville - 28
•Benning Road - 30
•Capitol Heights - 33
•L'Enfant Plaza - 33
•Rhode Island Avenue - 34
•Gallery Place - 35
•Minnesota Avenue - 40
•Deanwood - 41
•Brookland - 44

This list shows the top 10 stations by crime in Virginia from January to August 2013:

1.Van Dorn Street - 9
2.Rosslyn - 9
3.Braddock Road - 10
4.King Street - 10
5.Huntington -11
6.Franconia-Springfield - 11
7.East Falls Church - 11
8.Dunn Loring - 15
9.West Falls Church - 19
10.Vienna - 28

Do you feel safe at the Vienna Metro station? Why do you think the Vienna station has more crime than others?

The Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metro station has seen its share of crime so far in 2013. Patch file photo.

Shouldn't it be "The National Capitol Region"?

Wait till the new lines are complete. Watch the crime rate rise in Herndon and Reston.

The crime rate at even Vienna Metro station is less than the current per capita theft rate in Chantilly (without metro)

So you are full of shit champ

It shouldnt be a surprise that people have their cell phones ripped off. They stumble around blindly babbling into their phone or texting. It amzes me to watch people who are completely oblivious to what's happeneing around them all because of their little 2 x 3 screen that seems to be the center of their universe.

I drive by there every now and again when I'm not trying to hop on the toll roads, usually at least 10 people standing outside looking like they are eyeing people up for easy thefts, it's the weirdest shit when you consider how heavy the FCPD police presence is there. I mean, there are at least two officers in the Grocery store/5 guys down the street 24/7, it shouldn't be too much to ask for an officer to come in and chase off the guys standing suspiciously near the bike rack?

You just don't get it. Chantilly is a hole, Reston and Herndon are a bit more up-scale. Watch at how quick the crime rate rises (compared to what it is today).

Reston and Herndon already have more crime than, anyone anyone?

Vienna Metro

Ding ding ding

You see Reston and Herndon already have poor people who like committing crimes, selling drugs, and being violent because it too is a hole.

Its cheap because its far out, its a shit hole cause its cheap.

I was just reading about a home invasion, burglaries, and shit happening in Reston and Herndon threads this morning. Looks like they already have more than their fair share.

Bingo, in fact far more than Vienna, Dunn Loring, West Falls Church, East Falls Church and absolutely less than any of the Arlington locations near metro.

Heres the thing, metro property is expensive and have way too many people around to commit crimes. Criminals go to low population areas where htye can park their car, break in, and never be seen by anyone (not areas near metro)

This guy is a moron

Yes, because the Trayvons of SE DC will have a direct ride to this new area. They have alreay stolen most everything in their own hoods. It would make sense they branch out.

Yea and it makes perfect sense for them to ride out 65 minutes to Reston, rob people who have less money than, than going to capital hill, McPherson, or L'enfante and rob people who actually have cash and goods.

Jeez Stabby you are a genius or something, knobslobber

He's a genius compared to you. Reston is mostly a rich community, and there are multiple robberies listed in this thread...

Stealing from people poorer from themselves? Hardly.

If anything, this disproves anyone who thinks their neighborhood is going to go to crap because of metro. 28 crimes took place over the course of 8 months at the metro station. They don't break it down by thefts, roberies, and assualts, but I can tell you that any robery or assualt at the Vienna metro would be in the news, or at least in Patch. So all of these 28 crimes were people stealing cell phones or taking quarters from someones unlocked car in the garage. I hardly call that an impact on the neighborhood. If there is anything to worry about with metro in Reston, it is an influx of over-priced condos and apartments.

What about the neighborhoods around the Metro Station? Crime seems up this year in Fairfax, Falls Church, and areas around the metro.

I own a property one block from a Virginia metro station. People have been talking about a surge in crime from Metro since we bought the place 25 years ago (right before the orange line opened). The property has been broken into three times over the years. That's three more times than our primary residence in Western Fairfax county, but it's hardly a crime wave. The last break-in was by a guy who created his own crime spree in the area. All it takes is one determined thief to bump up the numbers. There may be thefts at the Metro station itself (I really don't know), but I can't say that it's affecting the neighborhood.

Get a grip people. You are not going to be overrun by hoards of marauders.

You must not be good at logic. Those people aren't from PG county by your own admission, since the metro is not there.

robbers will come by car no matter what and you are just scapegoating metro. PS Reston "rich" is not rich. Rich people don't live that far out, cheap ass poor people who can't live closer do. A house in reston is between 500k and 600k, there are condos in Arlington that sell for more than that, let alone the multi-million dollar homes.

Keep thinking you are doing well off in your shanty

So your house has been broken into THREE times and you don't think its that bad?

Are you from SE DC or something?

That's in 25 years.

Hardly. In part, it's all relative. We used to own property in DC, where even heavy metal bars did not keep people out. And that was in a good part of DC.

It's not Metro, it's the proximity to an urban area. For better or worse, the farther away you get, the lower the crime rate. I would imagine that's true in most urban/suburban areas.

I think everyone's point is, you should never have had any break-ins at all. Is this a house, townhouse, apartment, or some other structure that was broken into?

Some of you are such babies. You're perfectly safe at Vienna metro..most these clowns walking around with their face in their cell phone are paying no attention to anything around them, very easy to grab a cell phone and take off running. Or as pathetic as some of you sound, take your cell phone and just walk away while you pout and stomp your feet.
