FCPS Answer to HS Start Times - Less School!
Posted by: Rip van Winkle ()

"FCPS notified students earlier this month that some high schoolers can opt out of first period."

Is this for real? It's unbelievable. Don't solve the alleged problem, just make school shorter. That's putting the students first.

My kids do great at school and frankly they could accomplish the same amount in 2/3 time so, personally Id like to see them sleep in instead of getting up at 530 in the morning. In all likelyhood they would probably learn more in less time when rested...

just saying

ps the kids that struggle arent going to benefit from getting up in the wee hours...

This will be a free pass for the under performing kids to take fewer classes. The smart and motivated wont change their behavior at all. Just shows that FCPS does not give a shit about poor and minority students.

Most of my senior year of high school was a complete waste of time. Fully support this.

My college kids sleep in later than my 12 year old.

Thanks FCPS!

FCPS doesn't teach the kids anything. All the schools care about is school spirit, sports, turf, band trips, and cheerleading.

In all honesty senior year especially 2nd semester theres usually a class if not two you could cut and the kid would be fine. Most of them will have a bs class theyre taking just because they have too.

That said I wish I had that option and part of me wants them to have to go because I did. If they can get all their core classes done though and be good to go by then might as well just give them a period off instead of having useless classes or have them in a class they couldnt care less about disrupting it

This is the logical continuation of 1/2 day Mondays, education free Junes, and the endless other non-teaching bs that goes on in FCPS. now they'll just stop having school cause it's too early. You'd expect the children to be all for skipping class - you'd hope the adults would be....adult.

You ask the high school teachers in Loudoun (where they start around 9:00) if the later start helps, and they will say "fuck no, the kids just stay up even later at night." Hey enabling, my kid is perfect, everyone live their lives so that my kid NEVER experiences discomfort, if my kid gets a bad grade it's gotta be the teacher's fault, helicopter parents - go fuck yourselves. Teach your kid how to deal with life when it doesn't go their way, and maybe, just maybe, we'll see fewer kids killing themselves or other people when their lack of coping skills catches up with them. Life doesn't cater to your precious "Trey" or "Madison" or "Kenyatta," so teach them that shit before it's too late. You don't like getting up early Tiffany? Go to bed earlier. You don't like your science grade, study more Biff. I'm embarrassed to say that my generation is full of such shitty parents. That's all I've got to say about that.

that is ridiculous. the exact opposite of what all schools should be doing.

here's my fool proof plan to improve student performance. If you do badly on a test, you stay at school in study hall until you retake the test and do well. Study hall is between 3:00 and 6:00 pm. No exceptions. If you're in study hall all year, too bad for you. There is absolute silence in study hall. there is no talking or phones or laptops or masturbation or crack smoking. Mom or Dad can come pick you up, no late buses. They need to be punished too. The football team might be made up of science nerds, but that's ok. We don't care much about football at my schools.

School scores would instantly improve. Motivation would sky rocket. Problem solved. Some kids would resist. If they resist enough, they get subsidized military school training and a free haircut. If they don't take that, at some point it's out the door and on to their career at Mickey D's.

Only obstacles are pussy administrators and stupid, whiny parents.

I think I'll run for school board. I think i can beat Reverend Moon.

YOUR SCHOOL BOARD VOTE TO STARTING LATER:

SANDY EVANS - YES FOR STARTING LATER, BIG ORGANIZER OF SLEEP
PATTY REED - YES TO STARTING LATER, SON COULD NOT GET UP TO GO TO SCHOOL
ELIZABEHT SCHULTZ - YES TO STARTING LATER, CAN'T EVEN GET TO A MEETING ON TIME
RYAN MCELEVEN - YES TO STARTING LATER
DAN STORCK - YES TO STARTING LATER
MEGAN MCLAUGHLIN - YES TO STARTLING LATER

MOON - YES BECAUSE THE OTHERS SAID YES

THE ABOVE IS A MAJORITY VOTE, YOU VOTED THESE PEOPLE IN...SO IT IS TIME TO VOTE THEM OUT.

Vote them all in for another term if they run again. Later start times work with great results in other school systems and will work here also.

Take the shiny objects away at 9PM (cell phone, ipad, facebook, instagram, vine, etc.) and send them to bed. Later start times are a monument to zero discipline and self control for both the parents and students.

To OY VEY:

I suppose you don't believe parents rely on older kids to help take care of their younger siblings after school;
And I suppose you don't believe Fairfax is full of single parents and 2 parent households where they are tied to a schedule due to work affiliations and responsibilities;
And I suppose you don't understand that approx. 38% -42% of a HS's student body stays after school for sports or other activities getting home between 5:30 and 6:00 PM;
And I bett you believe the last time this came up all those opposed to it, which was a majoirty of the public didn't know what they were saying;
AND I am sure you could care less about all these people who prefer the times stay as they are because you really don't care about what the majority wants.

Hey dipshit, what time do you think kids will get home from practice when school doesn't end until close to 4:00?

All of your suppositions are incorrect. Also, show me the poll that shows a majority of the public is opposed to it. Or is that one of your silly suppositions?

Vote them out? Why? I agree to letting kids sleep later than 530am Sr. douchebag. Ill bet you dont even get up by 7am dickface. Oh and your fat ass metabolism is about 1/10 of a kid in hs. Unless we are raising farmers or bakers I suggest every kid should be able to sleep until 7am

Good lord you are a dim wit.
