We live in Century Oak and we love it. We are the second owners of our home; A few families on the block bought new and have shared some things about the develpment and the builders. There were at least three builders: Van Meter, Carr, and Toll Brothers. The upper section of the development, closer to Fair Oaks hospital, was built first. According to original owners, Century Oak was initially planned as a community for empty nesters which explains why the pool is only five feet and why some back yards are not very spacious. After Van Meter and Carr built some homes, Toll Brothers built the rest. As you drive down Misty Creek away from the hospital, the Toll Brothers homes begin at the Oak Mill stop sign. There are fewer mature trees in the Toll Brothers section because that area had been open farm land.
The quality of the homes is no better or worse than in other neighborhoods around here. I'd say some of the homes are better built than many of the quickly built brand-new homes in the area.
The people are wonderful. A group of volunteers plan special parades and events for Halloween and Independence Day. We have pool parties at the beginning and end of the pool season. Many residents of side streets plan their own additional Halloween and Independence Day potlucks and parties. There are bunko and reading groups. We've had a couple of movie nights at the clubhouse for the kids.
Century Oak has a nice clubhouse, currently being refurbished. The pool, as mentioned, is only five feet deep, but the pool committee provides basketball hoops and other floating toys to keep the kids busy. There is a kiddie pool and a spa. The two tennis courts have a nice view of the bigger pond which is maintained by a biologist who stocks the pond with a variety of fish to help keep the algae and insects in check.
Some families join the Fair Oaks pool in the neighborhood on the other side of the hospital so that their kids can take part in the swim team. Some families are members of the country club over on 50 across from Greenbrier.
There is no tot-lot, but we abutt Navy Elementary which has a nice playground, field and basketball courts.
There are some nice trails circling the neighborhood and the ponds, although if you like woodsy trails we've got nothing on Franklin Farm to the north of us, which is a trail-lover's paradise.
