Any Civil War Reenactments or Events planned in Northern VA this summer?
Posted by: Civil War ()

I keep seeing commercials on TV about Civil War trails in Maryland in honor of the 150th anniversary of some battles from the Civil War. I recall in Northern VA two years ago there were quite a few. Other than Sully Plantation where they show off some of the clothing, cannons, etc. a few times every year are there any planned events in any cities or towns around here?

I've heard about some stuff locally, but I don't see anything on the Fairfax County calendar. Not sure about the other counties, cities, and towns.

Interesting Note about Matthew Broderick...

In March 2010, Broderick was featured in the US version of the BBC program Who Do You Think You Are?. By his own admission, his participation in the ancestry research program, emotionally reconnected Broderick with the role he played in Glory twenty-two years earlier, as he discovered a paternal great-great-grandfather, Robert Martindale (incidentally sharing the same prenom as his Glory character), who actually was a Union soldier. A veteran of the Battle of Gettysburg, Martindale, who belonged to the 20th Connecticut, was killed in the aftermath of the Battle of Atlanta, and was eventually interred in an unnamed grave at the Marietta National Cemetery. Having identified the grave with the help of historian Brad Quinlin, Broderick's research enabled him to give his ancestor his name back.[22] In the same program Broderick discovered that his paternal grandfather, James Joseph Broderick II, whom he had never known, had been a highly decorated combat medic in World War I, he having earned his distinctions during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.[2]

Civil War Life Comes to Sully This Weekend
Skirmishes, rifle firings, and music planned for this weekend, as re-enactors set up at Sully Historic Site.
http://centreville.patch.com/groups/police-and-fire/p/civil-war-life-comes-to-sully-this-weekend

Imagine having soldiers from two warring armies trekking across your front yard. That's just what happened to the Barlow and Haight families during the Civil War, at the Chantilly park now called Sully Historic Site.

And this weekend, Sully will host an event that will give locals a chance to see what life was like for those families, and other people, during the Civil War. Re-enactors will conduct mock skirmishes, demonstrate camp life and fire rifles. Visitors can join in and march with "recruits" carrying wooden muskets.
There will be historic games, music and tours of the house available, with artifacts on display inside. The last tour starts at 4 p.m.

Admission is $9 for adults and $7 for seniors and children.

Will Fairfax add a civil war remembrance tax?

Yea, Great Idea !

Discussion: 01 Cent tax on gasoline and 01 cent tax on non-essential food. That should give us about $20 Million or so. Half of it can go to help strengthen vitality in Fairfax NOVA community via strengthening arts and science__ Cafe Twin.

Makes a lot of sense . Thank you for sharing the wonderful idea of a Civil War Rememberance Tax and strengthening commuinty vitality via arts and science .

Anyone see John Mosby the Gray Ghost & his Band
near the Manassass Train Station in the morning Fog last week ?

I live across the street and they have had a couple in the past year. They had one last year where they set up and cannon and fire it off every hour weatehr permitting. THey set up a small encampment and do tours. they also had a memorial weekend for the 10th Alabama Unit that has a mass grave in the battlefield. Folks from alabame came up for it. Kind of surprised.
