Don Draper's Apartment...Where can I find this layout in NOVA/DC?

I would like to know if this kind of apartment exists in our area. Of particular interest is the sunken living room, pass through kitchen, and balcony...

They have apartments that you buy as a giant empty space and then design your own layout.

Does it have a sunken living room? That's not something you can add really...

There are apartments like this in Culmore. Not much to look at from the outside, but inside - wow! Not advertised though; you have to knock on doors there to find them.

There are some apartment buildings near the Watergate on Virginia Avenue, NW (I know not Fairfax) that were built in the early 60s that have some of those features.

Sure it is, the ceilings are 11'

Physically, it CAN be done...but no landlord is going to let you bring in a contractor and excavate a sunken living room in an occupied building. I needed to get special permission and only work on certain days of the week for 2 hours at a time in order to drill holes in my concrete ceiling for a pot-rack.

I think that with 11' ceilings his point was that the floors wouldn't need to be excavated, but rather the floor around the sunken area could be raised. Still a lot of work, but easier than excavating a sunken hole.

Good luck in your search!

He wants an apartment like something out of a piece of crap TV show? This is worse than people who dress up as Star Trek characters. Far more expensive too.

Ok, now I understand. But, the problem with this method is that ALL of the surrounding flooring...to include bathrooms, kitchen, bedrooms and balcony would need to be raised by 2 feet AND all the doorframes would have to be raised 2 feet. It's less involved than excavating a sunken area in the living room and WAY more expensive but, thanks for the alternative view...

Emphasis on the word LAYOUT.

I don't care for the 60's aesthetics. I'd furnish it with modern furniture and art. I just really like the layout of that apartment. Relax...

I'm independently wealthy. I haven't worked a day in my life and I never will. The only approval I ever sought was given to me on the day I was born.
