Firing Range Coming to Dulles Airport
Facility will take one year to build, officials say.

A firing range training facility is coming to property shared by the Dulles International Airport, according to a news release from Arlington County.

The agreement between Arlington County and the management of the airport, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, was reached Tuesday. The training facility will be used by officers from the Arlington County Police Department and the Sheriff's Office.

The training facility will include two 25-lane, 50-yard open firing ranges, along with a 300-yard rifle deck. The joint facility also will offer a 7,200 square foot modular training building, several classrooms and a secure storage area. Arlington County has agreed to contribute approximately $7 million, or 40 percent of the total cost.

“We are fortunate to have this chance to partner with MWAA in building this much-needed training facility for our law enforcement departments,” said Arlington County Board Chairman J. Walter Tejada. “This facility will help ensure that our police and sheriff’s deputies, for years to come, will get the training they need to continue to protect and serve our community.”

The Arlington County Board voted unanimously to authorize moving forward with the joint venture.

Arlington County does not now have its own training facility, and has been using the MWAA police range since 2008 through an informal agreement. Alternative partnering options were explored during the process, including using regional private ranges. Those options were not feasible because they offered limited scheduling, inadequate capacity and operating costs that far exceeded those in the new agreement.

Active-duty Arlington County officers are mandated to meet firearms qualifications on a yearly basis. With the current size of both the Police Department and Sheriff’s Office, training is required on 268 days out of the year. Current range training includes: in-service qualifications, patrol rifle qualifications, pre-academy training, SWAT, Basic Taser Operator and recertification and simulated ammunition training.

With this agreement, Arlington County will have guaranteed availability and reliable scheduling to accomplish the mandated training needs, while addressing the emerging threats facing communities nationwide. The construction of the facility is expected to take one year and officers will continue to use the existing range in the interim.

Isn't there already a rather large government firing range next to Dulles? Doesn't seem cost-effective to install another. - just share what's there.

There already is a police range on the Dulles Airport property. Has been there for while and is used by the airport police. They are just building a new, bigger range. The range in the picture above is the Fairfax county range.

If you read the article it said that Arlington needs the range 268 days out of the year. Basically that is every day except the weekend. How do you propose the other police departments "share" with Arlington?

Yes,, you're absolutely right - an Arlington cop wouldn't want to be seen standing nest to a Fairfax cop.

My bad.

Why would a cop need long range gun practice? I would think most of their encounters using a firearm would be at close range. That's all we need, cops thinking they are snipers.

The Gooogle Maps link shows the existing long range - note there are a couple target vehicles fairly near to the firing line and a bus blocking the entire range a little more down range - same thing with one of the outdoor pistol ranges - there are two cars, one right next to a vehicle on the firing line and another a little further away (assumed is "jump out of cop car fire at target vehicle" practice)

You do know there are snipers on the police department? Other officers who are not snipers also have rifles.

Who cares.

It's just tax money and there's always more where that came from.

On the contrary it should. Now when the cops blow away some crazy asian lady they can take her out from 100 yards away and not get hit by the ricochets.

Nice that the Arlington libs managed to move their noisy firing range to bother others outside of Arlington.

$17.7 million for a firing range??? I'm sorry - somebody must be smoking crack.

Oh wait, it's million-dollar bus stop Arlington, and MWAA. That explains it.
