Safety Tips: Preventing Home Burglaries
http://mclean.patch.com/articles/safety-tips-preventing-home-burglaries

Some residents were on edge leaving for work Monday morning after learning this weekend that 10 home were burglarized Friday in McLean during working hours.

The ten burglaries might to be related to one another, as they all occurred between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. in a relatively small area.

Fairfax County Police Department officials said all ten burglaries involved "forced entry" into the homes. Police said they are asking people to be vigilant—particularly people who may be at home during the day while their neighbors are at work.

While safety starts with locking your doors and windows every time you leave the house, here are additional tips from the Fairfax County Police Department:

See Fairfax County's official guide to home safety in the media box at right (click on the PDF).

•A residence which presents a “lived-in” appearance is a deterrent to burglars. Never leave notes that can inform a burglar that your house is unoccupied.
•Make certain all windows and doors are secured before departing. An empty garage advertises your absence. Close the doors.
•When going out at night, leave one or more interior lights on and perhaps have a radio playing (TV sets should not be left unattended). Timers may be purchased that will turn lights on and off during your absence.
•Do not leave door keys under flower pots or doormats, inside an unlocked mailbox, over the doorway, or in other obvious places.
Additional tips from other police departments and insurance companies:

Make sure any bushes near your doors and windows are trimmed back and don’t create nice hiding places for burglars.

Some insurance companies recommend putting a heavy wood or steel stopper in the track of your sliding glass doors. These can help prevent the doors from being opened easily from the outside.

Don’t leave a note on your front door for your kids, the babysitter, nanny or anyone else.

If you have an alarm system, make sure it is connected to the skylights in your house, not just the first-floor windows and doors.

If you have a mail slot in your front door, make sure it’s not possible for a burglar to reach through it and unlock your door.

Although the May 3 burglaries occurred during the day, it certainly can’t hurt to install motion-detecting lights around your property for nighttime safety.

Know your neighbors and recognize their cars.

Have other tips for your neighbors? Leave them in the comments below.

Police are asking anyone who may have seen a pick-up truck or El Dorado-style vehicle in McLean Friday with a man and a woman inside (or with other information on Friday’s burglaries) to call Fairfax County Police officials.

You can contact Crime Solvers by phone at 1-866-411-TIPS/8477, e-mail at www.fairfaxcrimesolvers.org or text “TIP187” plus your message to CRIMES/274637 or call Fairfax County Police at 703-691-2131.

Apparently well-to-do does not necessarily equal smart.

The illusion of security is not security. Forced entry cannot be stopped. But there is a difference between FE that takes two minutes and forced entry that takes two hours and makes tons of noise.

If they are dumb enough to leave money and real jewelry lying around where it can be stolen stupidity got its reward.

Look into 3M window security film. They invented the product. Banks and jewelry stores use it for a reason. It moves the perps down the road to easier pickings ... to your home.

I have some friends that live in these places and their security measures consist of an alarm and that's it. I've told them to buy reinforced doors and windows but none of them seem to realize its necessary. I believe its a matter of "appearances" over common sense. There's this illusion that extra security is ugly or detracting from a home. I guess that is until they get home and find everything but the kitchen sink gone.

Three Burglaries Friday in Idylwood Area
Three burglaries reported Friday afternoon involved similar circumstances.
http://mclean.patch.com/articles/three-similar-burglaries-friday-in-idylwood-area

Three homes were burglarized Friday in the Idylwood neighborhood, according to Fairfax County Police reports.

The three homes—on Maydan Lane, Tod Street and Virginia Lane—are within about a mile of each other.

In every case, a resident reported that someone had forced entry into a home through a window and stole several items, including jewelry. All three burglaries were reported Friday afternoon.

Earlier this month, 10 McLean homes were burglarized in a span of just 5.5 hours. Those burglaries were also on a Friday and involved forced entry.

There is no information available about whether these incidents are connected to each other or if they are connected to that series of 10 burglaries that all occured Friday, May 3 in McLean. (A message to Fairfax County police sent late Monday night was not immediately returned.)

•See: 10 Burglaries in Less Than 6 Hours in McLean
Here are the three burglaries that occured Friday, May 10, as they appeared in the Fairfax County Police Department's daily activity reports posted Monday.

BURGLARY, 7600 block of Maydan Lane, 5/10/13, 2:15 [p.m.]. A resident reported someone entered the home and stole several items to include jewelry. Forced entry was made through a window.

BURGLARY, 7200 block of Tod Street, 5/10/13, 3:10 p.m. A resident reported someone entered the home and stole several items to include jewelry. Forced entry was made through a window.

BURGLARY, 7700 block of Virginia Lane, 5/10/13, 6:20 p.m. A resident reported someone entered the home and stole a laptop computer. Forced entry was made through a window.

Feel sorry for the police on this one. McLean is a large area with lots of side roads and properties. One would think that these houses have hi-tech security systems in place and/or security cameras.

Police: 'Too Early to Tell' if McLean, Idylwood Burglaries are Connected
Fairfax County Police are stepping up patrols and are asking residents to stay vigilant.
http://mclean.patch.com/articles/too-early-to-tell-if-mclean-idylwood-burglaries-are-connected

It is too early to tell whether the three burglaries Friday in Idylwood are connected to each other or if they are connected to 10 burglaries that occured the Friday before in McLean, Fairfax County Police Department officials say.

In the Friday, May 10 burglaries, three homes were broken into with forced entry through windows. Forced entry was also used in the 10 burglaries on Friday, May 3.

Fairfax County Police officers from the McLean District have stepped up patrols in the area, but Officer Bud Walker said neighbors watching out for neighbors is a huge part of home safety.

Police are asking retirees and anyone else who may be at home during the day to keep an eye on their neighbors' homes. Walker said people should call police when they see unusual activity, noting that residents may notice unfamiliar cars and people in an area before a police officer does.

No, that's what the GOP would say to make Obama look bad. By the way, some of those big homes are owned by GOP members.

Three Suspects Arrested; Charged in Serial Burglaries
McLean Police District – On Monday, May 13, detectives identified and arrested three suspects believed to be responsible for a recent series of residential burglaries in Fairfax County, the Town of Vienna, and in the City of Falls Church.

Working with information provided by the Prince George’s County Police Department in Maryland, Fairfax County Detectives along with detectives from the Town of Vienna Police Department and the City of Falls Church Police Department, developed potential suspects in the series of burglaries.

While responding to four reports of burglaries in the McLean area on Monday, May 13, detectives spotted the suspect vehicle, a 2006, silver, Ford Explorer, unoccupied. Surveillance was set up on that vehicle and when the suspects returned to it, they were apprehended.

Craig Hopta, 29, Michael Lewis, 29 and Diana Seaborn, 34, all from Maryland, were arrested and transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and they were each charged with four counts of burglary, two counts of grand larceny, two counts of larceny for resale, and possession of burglarious tools.

The burglaries on Monday, May 13 took place on Daleview Drive, Laurelwood Drive, Virginia Lane, and on Alvord Street.

Detectives have linked these suspects to a larger series of burglaries within Fairfax County including, cases reported in the May 4 news release below, as well as cases in the Town of Vienna and in the City of Falls Church. Other cases are also being evaluated to determine if they are connected.

Items stolen during the burglaries included jewelry, electronics, handbags, silverware and cash. Detectives have recovered some of the stolen property and will attempt to reunite it with its rightful owners.

The investigation continues and additional charges are anticipated.

Fairfax County Police would like to thank the police departments in Prince George’s County, Maryland, the Town of Vienna and in the City of Falls Church for their great effort and cooperation in this serial burglary case.

Police: Serial Burglary Suspects Linked to Six Vienna Homes
More charges could be coming for trio that allegedly hit homes across Vienna, McLean, Falls Church this month.
http://vienna.patch.com/articles/police-serial-burglary-suspects-linked-to-six-vienna-homes#photo-5003118

Three people accused of launching a burglary spree across Vienna and two other jurisdictions have been linked to at least six reported robberies in town, police said Thursday — three of them in the span of just more than 10 hours.

A day after Craig Hopta, 29, Michael Lewis, 29 and Diana Seaborn, 34, all of Maryland, were arrested by Fairfax County police on burglary and larceny charges, among others, Vienna Police said they believe the trio is responsible for also taking items from half a dozen Vienna homes.

More charges could be coming as Fairfax County, Vienna and Falls Church police continue their investigation.

Vienna Police said the suspects allegedly robbed the following locations (see locations in the map above):

•200 Block Courthouse Circle, SW | April 26 between 8:45 a.m. and 6:21 p.m.
•400 Block Holmes Drive, NW | May 10 between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
•600 Block Yeonas Drive, SW | May 10 between 8:00 a.m. and 6:44 p.m.
•200 Block Berry Street, SE | May 10 between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
•300 Block Broadleaf Drive, NE| May 13 between 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
•600 Block John Marshall Drive, NE |May 13 between 8:45 a.m. and 5:45 p.m.
The suspects were discovered Monday as Fairfax County police investigated a number of burglaries in McLean — including 10 burglaries that occurred in six hours May 4.It's unclear how many homes in all were targeted by the suspects.

During the suspects' crime spree, they allegedly lifted thousands of dollars worth of jewelery, handbags, electronics, silverware and cash, Fairfax County police said.

In a Vienna police report released Thursday, the department did not disclose what was taken from each home, but all of the homes were apparently burglarized through a smashed window.

The earliest robbery occurred April 26; the latest was reported on May 13, hours before the suspects were arrested in McLean. All of them allegedly occurred during daylight hours.

Police are still investigating the case. If you have information about a burglary, email glose@viennava.gov or call 703-255-6396.
