PE for 11th and 12th graders
Posted by: Yoga ()

I have heard PE will be a required class for all 4 years of high school in the coming years. Does anyone know if this is true and when it starts if true?

Yes, it is true.

Yes, it is true. We(FCPS) decided that 4 years of gym class is necessary because of the following reasons:

1. Kids are becoming too overweight because of all the fast food establishments not providing a healthy menu.

2. Video games are causing more kids to stay inside rather than being outside exercising.

3. To increase the GPA in FFX County schools because the Silverbacks and illegal immigrants are bringing down the GPA of our school system. We needed to remove an educational class during the last two highschool years(in some cases it's a 5 year program for them)in order for them to be given a fair chance at meeting the GPA requirements to graduate.

Disagree on the first 2 because we had both those problems when I was a kid and kids weren't as fat or really fat at all. Here's the real problem:

Freaking helicopter parents who don't make their kids walk anywhere or play outside.

Forget mandatory PE, instead let's save tax payer money and space out the bus stops. Why must the bus stop every 3 houses to drop of every little fatty?

Why not instead of all these silly little activities say today your going to play outside?

Because if something happens to that kid walking from the stop to their house the school system will get sued till the end of time

So is this just for FCPS, or a state wide thing? What school year does this start?

Because today's parents are too busy sticking "my kid succeeds" stickers on their cars then helping their kids succeed in reality! They don't even teach them to look before crossing the street but blame the school if their dumb kids runs in front of a car! It's called PARENTING and it's what our parents did. And Katie you're totally right, it's a fight to get the kids to go out of the house to play. Personally, I get creative, $5 and they can go get a snack from 7-11, a mile away, next to a very busy road, but hey, I parented my children, they won't go in the street and no matter what snacks they get, they walked a total of 2 miles to get it. Stratgy!

By the time kids reach HS it's mostly like too late with regard to true obesity. They need to target this in Elementary School. My 6th grader has PE 1x week. That's not enough imo.

We need to add P90X and boot camp classes to the gym schedule. Kids need to move more during PE. Make it fun!

Kudo's to you for actually trying to get your kids to go outside and to walk somewhere. It's seems like most parents I know of do the opposite-they never bother to teach the kids to cross the street-they just say oh it's so dangerous let's drive you everywhere and helicopter over you and teach you nothing expect meaningless soccer, ballet, etc. In fact, I've heard plenty of parents bitch that they can't park in the handicap spaces because the horror their kid might have to walk across the parking lot.

I know, there was a case like that in PG county that I read about. It was ridiculous. Really annoying the jury awarded a settlement from the school system. I understand suing the driver if they were at fault, but the school system...really?

Katie where are you. Please come back. I don't care about your gender reassignment surgery. You are all woman to me. It is OK that kids can not come from your belly. The pubic lice that you have are just as good as children. It is OK that you gave them to me. Everyone here worships you.

This is fantastic if accurate.

I enjoyed the heck out of PE class - I looked forward to the competition every day and it was a very welcome break from classwork. It was all four years of high school.

I liked academics and was a very good student, going to one of the best undergrad schools in the nation (think way higher ranked than, for example UVa). But I really benefited from PE, especially in terms of developing mental and physical toughness. The school was the runner-up in the state football finals that year, so there was plenty of guys to scuffle with in speedball, street hockey, flag football in name only (tackling was frequent) or whatever else we were doing.

My last year (it was a Northern state) I enrolled in Eskimo PE, with a promise never to go indoors. This was often a wild ride, and the class was in effect a solid insurance policy against effete behavior and wussification. Archaic thoughts? Not with teenage boys. We have long lost, in our overly feminized schools, what makes them tick.

FCPS has a newer LIFE unit where P90x is in, with other, newer things that was never in vogue. Hope 4 years of PE is true.
