Kudo's to you for actually trying to get your kids to go outside and to walk somewhere. It's seems like most parents I know of do the opposite-they never bother to teach the kids to cross the street-they just say oh it's so dangerous let's drive you everywhere and helicopter over you and teach you nothing expect meaningless soccer, ballet, etc. In fact, I've heard plenty of parents bitch that they can't park in the handicap spaces because the horror their kid might have to walk across the parking lot.
