Westfield or Robinson.

Wrong approach. Since Virginia plays HS soccer in the spring, very few college coaches pay attention to it. Find a Division 1 team in the National Capital Soccer League. If he does well there he will do well on any local high school team, and have fun at the same time.

Coach is correct. High school soccer in NOVA sucks. My son played NCSL D1 & High School soccer and the differences are like day and night. College coaches don't look at high school soccer at all. They concentrate on regional and showcase tournaments that only club soccer teams participate in. My son wouldn't have gotten into college at all if it weren't for his club team, which was undefeated, #1 in the state and nationally ranked his last year playing for them. His high school team wouldn't have even earned honorable mention in a local newspaper.

Oh...forgot to mention. If you do choose between those two schools, I'd go to Westfields. Their coach, Tom Torres, won coach of the year and turned that team around in short order. And above that, he's well connected with many of the Va. colleges and can get you recognized.

NCSL is for boys only though, yes? Wonder what alternatives are available for girls.

Well, if that really is a serious question, the women's equivalent to NCSL starts with WAGS (Washington Area Girls Soccer League), and the best of the best in the older age groups play, at least in the Spring, in Region 1 Premier League or in a second tier Region 1 League (I think one is called Colonial) instead of WAGS. The boys can do the same, but I believe that NCSL does not lose as many teams to the Region 1 leagues as does WAGS. Region 1 is one of four regions organized under US Youth Soccer, and extends from Virginia up to Maine.

There is also a higher level league for the best one or two Region 1 girls teams, and that is called the USYS National League. That League competes several times a year at the biggest and best College Showcase tournaments. A "competing" National League, now called ECNL, and previously known as the Red Bull League (Red Bull dropped its sponsorship this year), similarly has its teams compete against each other at the top College Showcase tournaments. I don't know the boys' side as well, but I believe that the top youth level nationally is the US Developmental Academy program, referred to as "Academy" for short.

So, yes, the girls side is club soccer focused, and high school soccer is there to show some school spirit by participating. Lake Braddock, Chantilly, Robinson, Woodson and Stone Bridge are usually present in the area Top 10 for girls' HS soccer.

Thanks, Going Clubbing. Yeah, that was a serious question, though I do ordinarily try to avoid those. (Smartassery comes to me more naturally.)

No problem, I just wanted to preface it in case you possibly were insinuating that soccer on the boys' side presented better opportunities than on the girls' side. It is pretty equal, as far as I can tell, although because the boys' system has been operating longer, the girls have to put out a little more effort to ensure being seen by the college coaches.

But on both sides, HS soccer is a diversion to advancing to play soccer in college, be it D1, D3, or D2. For the advanced player, the school spirit thing offers some fun that they probably haven't had for a couple of years.

BTW, to the original poster/Westfield hater, boys' coach Tom Torres at Westfield is very competent and accomplished. He did have Sean Murnane there when they won States, but it takes more than one player to win states. And if you were just posting hoping for a mention of Westfield, as your later post suggests, then you came to the right place!

Club soccer is what matters around here. For a boy who is truly gifted, the DC United Academy is the way to go. McLean is also part of the Academy and Gene Mishalow now runs the show, which is a big upgrade from German Peri. There are many good club teams in Annandale, Arlington and elsewhere.

Oakton will be the power in girls' soccer for the next three years.

THat's probably because my infant son woke up. Yeah, that's right, I actually had sex, something you'll never know about. Go back to tuching little boys, pedophile Beckham. I can only assume that you got up and were able to post at 8:16 am because you were NOT out last night getting pussy. Shut the fuck up and go back to sucking anonymous dicks at the gloryhole, or maybe you are about to go back to your job working the mop bucket at the local bukkake-fest.

It sounds like someone has some real insecurity issues. Project much?

Nope, no insecurity over here. I just state the truth. No one cares about soccer. The proof is that only the parents of the players show up at high school games. Scoreboard.

At least you have tossed aside the belligerence. Just remember that more kids play soccer than any other sport in this country. When they grow up they will themselves have kids who will play soccer, so the sport will keep growing.

Why am I posting now instead of watching the Redskins? Two long Brandon Marshall touchdowns were too much to stomach.

Yes, more KIDS play soccer, but they age out of it by middle school.

More 10-year-olds play soccer than any other sport. Then all but the weenie-est realize it sucks. Why do you have so much trouble admitting soccer sucks? I've been being assured that pro soccer is "The Next Big Thing" in America for my whole life. Guess what? It ain't happening.

You are claiming that for your "whole life" people have been telling you this--your whole life. That is clearly a gross exaggeration. There is no grand conspiracy to assure you of anything. What would be the point? The posters here all sound incredibly insecure. If you don't like soccer that is fine, but why you feel so threatened by it is a mystery. Are you afaid that your girlfriend will run off with some 5'4" Maradona clone? Grow a pair.

Soccer is only good for violence after a big win.

I'm sure France loves soccer hooligans in their Country, And by the way it was a bunch of algerian muzzies doing the violence

McLean is no longer part of the Academy. (Epic fail.) Go with DC United.

i say just play for the high school team, spend rest of time and energy on academics. sports last, maybe, thru college. odds of it going further are ten thousand to one against. anybody can make it academically....
